11-18-07 -- Multiple Improvements Planned

New School
Earlier this month, Cincinnati (Ohio) Christian University kicked off its “Beyond the Walls” campaign to raise millions for building renovations, campus development, and new scholarships. The $30 million endeavor will also fund construction of community outreach, leadership, and student services centers.

The Leadership Center will include the Russell School of Ministry, a new school—named in honor of Bob and Judy Russell—providing summer and winter session classes on preaching, leadership, and other topics reflecting the Russells’ ministry philosophy.

Barry McCarty, senior minister with Valley View Christian Church, Dallas, Texas, will teach the school’s first class, “Contemporary Preaching,” January 7-11, 2008. Future classes will include “Leading by Serving and Serving by Leading,” “Creative Methods for Evangelism and Community Impact,” and “Blending Biblical Truth with Human Need.” Students completing all four courses will receive a certificate of participation, and the 12 hours may also be taken for academic credit.

To register for the January class, visit www.ccuniversity.edu by December 21.

Church ‘Meets’ a Need

Mark Crull, a Christian Standard reader and executive pastor with Northview Christian Life Church (Carmel, Indiana), recently shared Northview’s commitment to be “externally focused” in some creative ways.

He writes, “About three years ago our entire leadership team read the book The Externally Focused Church by Rick Rusaw and Eric Swanson. In many ways, it affirmed our heartbeat for being a blessing to our community. We began brainstorming what it meant for Northview to be externally focused.

“One idea that emerged was the development of a championship-quality 3K and 5K cross-country course on our 80-acre property. This fall our church will host several large meets, including the IHSAA (Indiana High School Athletic Association) Semi-State Cross Country Meet and the Indiana State Middle School Championships. It is estimated that 40 high school teams and 4,000 spectators will attend the FlashRock Invitational, our largest meet this season.”

Name Plan

In 2005, BUZZ shared the story of two Nashville congregations—one instrumental, one a cappella—and their plans for sharing a building and a ministry.

Today those plans have changed. Although First Christian Church and The Family of God at Woodmont Hills still enjoy a warm relationship, this month they resume meeting as two separate congregations—and First Christian relaunches with a new name.

“After the 2006 NACC we talked about moving forward together as one large church,” says Bryant Brown, senior minister at the new Aspen Grove Christian Church. “But then we received an unexpected God opportunity to buy our own building.”

The facility—nicknamed the “W building” by locals and known around town as a popular concert venue—includes space for worship, expanded children’s programming, special youth events, and more.

“We hope Christian artists will continue to perform here,” Brown says, “and someday we hope to develop a school of the arts for children.”

Because of its proximity to local office parks and industrial areas, Aspen Grove also plans to proactively minister to nearby businesses and their employees by sharing its large meeting spaces and conference rooms.

“Here at ‘The Grove’ we are focused on more than just a new name,” Brown says. “This is a new beginning for our church.”

Good Night
Just last week Southland Christian Church, Lexington, Kentucky, held its seventh annual “Jesus Prom” for adults with physical or mental challenges. SCC writes, “The Jesus Prom is known for its special treatment of very special people. ‘Prommers’ receive the royal treatment as they are escorted to hair and makeup (sessions), to dinner, and then to an evening of dancing. Hundreds of volunteers help to make the night a success.”
