Adding a Satellite Campus
Merging Church Central Christian Church (Henderson, Nevada) recently merged with Orchard Valley Baptist Church; Orchard Valley’s building in the northeast section of Henderson will become Central’s third satellite campus. Kurt Ervin, executive pastor of church expansion, says the new location will offer two Sunday morning services and a Spanish service on Sunday nights.
According to the Las Vegas Sun, Orchard Valley leaders approached Central about the merger earlier this year. “While Central Christian will use its own pastor to oversee the location, Orchard Valley’s ministers will retain an active role with the congregation,” the Sun writes.
In addition to multiple services at its original, Summerlin, and southwest locations, Central also offers an online campus at www.centralchristian.com.
Pray Days Every Thursday evening, LifeSpring Christian Church (Cincinnati, Ohio) combines two mainstays of church life—potluck dinners and prayer meetings—into a fresh experience for 18-25 year olds.
After a shared meal, 20 to 30 “Potluck & A Prayer” attendees pray in a darkened room while Scripture and video guide their personal contemplation. A band in the balcony improvises music in response to the words and images, creating “a new song” on the spot. As frankincense burns to symbolize prayers going before the Lord, individuals from both the gathered crowd below and the balcony above step to the microphone to offer spoken prayers.
At the end of the hour, the group gathers to share insights from their prayers and from the Scripture. www.lifespringchristian.org
In the Lead The Orchard Group (New York City) announced Brent Storms’s appointment as president beginning July 1. Storms is the fourth president in the 61-year history of Orchard Group (formerly known as the “Go Ye” Chapel Mission). Paul Williams, who also serves as editor-at-large of Christian Standard, has served as president and CEO of the ministry since 1989. Under his leadership, Orchard Group has expanded to serve the entire Northeast and new churches have grown from an average of 50 people at five years to an average of almost 500 members at the same milestone.
Storms served as founding minister of Harbor of Hope Christian Church near Boston from 1999 to 2005, and moved to Manhattan in 2007 to establish the first New York City office in Orchard Group’s history. His wife, Rhesa, works as music and programming director at Church of the Incarnation, a new Orchard Group plant on the west side of the city.
As president, Storms will share leadership with Williams for the next two years before assuming responsibility for directing all facets of the ministry. He will also become CEO of the organization beginning July 1, 2011; Williams remains chairman of the board of trustees. www.orchardgroup.org
