A New Way to Raise Funds Via Golf
Par Excellence
Between them, JD King and Duane King have decades of fund-raising experience.
“I’ve worked for a variety of nonprofit ministries including a church plant, a Christian school, and even a national Christian music festival,” says JD, president and CEO of On Par On Purpose (Spring Hill, Tennessee), a “fund-raising and friend-raising” program. “My dad, who serves as our vice president, has also been involved in development for Deaf Missions (Council Bluffs, Iowa) since he founded it in 1971.”
The Kings believe the On Par program, a golf fund-raiser that uses a player sponsorship approach, raises more money and builds more awareness than the traditional “pay-to-play” method.
“Hospitals and other organizations typically count on corporate donors to make their pay-to-play events profitable,” says JD. “But corporations rarely offer such public support to churches and ministries. The player sponsorship approach asks participants to be part of the fund raising.”
Each person commits to sending at least 50 letters asking for donations and support. In return, they enjoy a day of golf, lunch, and even the chance to win prizes—all for free.
“On average each golfer will raise $1,250 by following a few simple steps,” JD says. “We also create a Web site for each ministry event where you can post videos, spread the word with local media, and promote your ministry. I haven’t found any other approach with such low risk and potential reward.”
On Par On Purpose has worked with Hearing & Receiving Christ Ministries (Knoxville, Tennessee), Christian Evangelistic Mission of Iowa, and many others. For more information visit www.OnParOnPurpose.com.
Grow Business
When Scott Smith, a financial consultant, started the Fellowship Chamber two years ago, he attended Adventure Christian Church (Rocklin, California) and received help from members of Adventure’s staff.
“But individuals from local Presbyterian, Baptist, Lutheran, and other churches also played key roles,” Smith says. “That’s the beauty of this group; we attend many wonderful churches, but we are unified as business owners and as believers.”
The chamber provides networking experiences, monthly luncheons with guest speakers, and more. The 70 members also benefit from opportunities to share their businesses by sponsoring events, buying ad space, and sending e-blasts to other members.
But building professional connections is just part of the goal.
“We have three commissions,” Smith says. “Serving God, serving our community with our time and resources, and serving each other with prayer, coaching, and encouragement.”
The group invites every member to brainstorm new strategies; as a result, a “mastermind marketing” team now meets regularly to discuss marketing topics, brainstorm solutions, and pray together.
Area ministries also have opportunities to present their mission and goals to the group so chamber members can offer “time, talent, and treasure.”
“I want to see Christian business owners serve not only in their church, but through volunteering and board leadership in the community,” Smith says. “The chamber creates opportunities for people to bless others with their talents.”
