Leader's Toolbox

J. Michael Shannon

Get Real with Bobb Biehl

Do you struggle with differentiating leadership and management tasks? Not sure how to begin a strategic plan? Can’t decide if your style of leadership is really leadership at all? If you answered "yes" to any of these, you might benefit from some of the resources provided by Bobb Biehl (yes his name is spelled Bobb).

Biehl is president of Masterplanning Group International. As such, he has consulted with many executives and corporations, but he has also devoted himself to helping churches and parachurch organizations. He has been a board member of Focus on the Family and an executive with World Vision. Biehl holds degrees in psychology and counseling.

On Biehl’s Web site, www.masterplanninggroup.com, you can find information on his consulting services and seminars. The most helpful section is the Resource Shop.

Solve Problems
Those who struggle with whether their temperament and leadership is valid would benefit from reading Biehl’s book, Stop Setting Goals. Don’t get excited about that title until you see the subtitle. The subtitle is, If You Would Rather Solve Problems. This book shows there is more than one way to move your organization forward. Some people begin with the ideal of what an organization should be. Others begin with what currently exists and identify problems that need to be addressed. Biehl believes both methods are valid.

Develop Leadership Skills
One of Biehl’s most popular books is 30 Days to Confident Leadership. It is listed as temporarily unavailable, but a notebook, tapes, and CDs of the seminar version are still available on Biehl’s Web site. This resource identifies 30 skills in the area of personal and corporate life and discusses how to develop them.

Write a Plan
Another book temporarily out of stock at Biehl’s site, but available in tape and CD versions, is Masterplanning. This book will help anyone who is in charge of or contributing to the drafting of a strategic plan. There are, of course, many ways to go about drafting a plan, but this is a very helpful approach. You also might want to take advantage of the "Masterplanning Arrow." This fill-in-the-blank chart helps to organize and coalesce the specifics of your strategic plan. (You can still find these books on Internet sites like Amazon.) Other helpful materials include resources to help a ministerial search committee and mentoring.

There is so much a church leader needs to know today, including biblical studies, theology, church history, and communication. Leadership and management from a biblical perspective are also essential. A little assistance from someone like Bobb Biehl is valuable.
