A Call to 40 Days of Prayer

Dave Butts, founder of Harvest Prayer Ministries (Terre Haute, IN) and chairman of America”s National Prayer Committee, has set up www.40daysofprayer.net to provide information, prayer guides, and links to ministries sponsoring prayer efforts for the 40 days leading up to this year”s elections.

The ministry writes, “The challenge is not to pray for a specific candidate, but simply to have 24/7 prayer for our nation during that time. We are beyond political solutions for our nation, but we are desperate for God”s intervention. We are challenging people to pray God”s purposes for our nation, revival in the church, and to pray that America would return to God.”

Specifically, starting Sept. 28 and continuing through the general election on Nov. 6, diverse leaders from across the spectrum of the U.S. church are calling for focused prayer for:

1. Revival in the church, that another Great Awakening would sweep across America as the Lord”s people humble themselves in repentance and prayer (2 Chronicles 7:14).

2. A standard of righteousness to be raised over this nation (Proverbs 14:34).

3. The elections””that God would intervene. This is not advocating a partisan or political effort, but instead is a plea to bring God into a process that desperately needs his wisdom and direction (Isaiah 48:17).

All Christians are encouraged to do something proactive and powerful in prayer leading up to the election, as well as to vote on Election
Day.

Forgive Us Our Debts

Do we seek God’s forgiveness—both for sins we have willfully committed and for hidden faults that are hard for us to see? And do we extend forgiveness to others, whether they intentionally did something wrong or they sinned without even realizing it?

The January/February edition of the Christian Standard has been dedicated to the development of Christian leadership. The concern for leadership within our churches is nothing new.
