Drive-through Prayer Draws Traffic

Since last April, Centerpointe Christian Church (Lexington, KY) has offered “drive-through prayer” one Wednesday night a month. A small team of volunteers stands on several corners and in front of the church waving signs to direct drivers to the building, while two couples wait to pray with anyone who pulls in.

“We see everything, from families having trouble to people coming right from the bars,” says Rex Hughes, coordinator of the ministry. “Each month is a reminder of the burdens people around us carry every day.”

The team hands out cold water in the summer and hot chocolate in the winter, and stands outside ready to pray no matter what the weather. In addition to praying with the people in each car, volunteers write the requests on small cards, and the elders and staff pray for those needs during weekly meetings.

“Eventually we”d like to create a small group that leads the outreach and prays for the requests throughout the month,” Hughes says. “We”ve also talked about trying to offer the ministry every week.”

About 20 to 30 cars stop for prayer each time, and some drivers return each month for a “tune up.” A few families have joined Centerpointe as a result of the ministry, but Hughes says that was never the goal.

“It”s just about caring for people,” he says. “Life is unsettling right now. We want people to know we love them.”

Borrowed by the Lord

The Lord has given us far more blessings than we deserve. So let’s hold our possessions loosely and cheerfully hand over anything the Lord can use to expand his kingdom.

Following Through … Even Years Later

I want to speak to those, like me, who once upon a time made a commitment to serve. I thought that chapter had closed. My commitment that summer circa 1993 may not have panned out how I expected, but I think that through the working of the Spirit, the love of the Son, and the guidance of the Father it is still something I’m called to do.
