MACU Breaks Ground for Heritage Hall, Names Two Buildings

by | 23 March, 2022 | 0 comments

Mid-Atlantic Christian University made several building-related announcements last week during its Gospel Rally in Elizabeth City, N.C.

For starters, MACU held a groundbreaking for its new Heritage Hall. It will be larger than the former Heritage Hall, which partially collapsed in September 2020 while undergoing roofing work.

The new building will be two stories, with a stadium-style classroom, science laboratories, and state-of-the-art technology, said president John Maurice.

“It’s going to be a tremendous place to raise up the new generations of exceptional Christian leaders,” he told a crowd that gathered for the rally.

Meanwhile, a new 7,000-square-foot cafeteria building at MACU is almost finished, and Maurice announced it would be named Alligood Commons, in honor of Phillip and Ora Jane Alligood, longtime building and grounds supervisor and cafeteria manager, respectively. Both graduated from Roanoke Bible College, as MACU previously was known.

“It’s been an honor to work here,” said Phillip Alligood, whose wife died in January. She spent much of her life working here. I’m just working on 57 years, but I wouldn’t trade it for any place on the face of the earth.”

Additionally, Maurice announced that MACU’s welcome center would be named the Lewis Welcome Center in honor of 49-year employees/husband-and-wife Garrett and Melissa Lewis. Garrett Lewis serves as an admissions counselor and his wife has served as secretary for four of the college’s presidents.

(A Facebook video of the Gospel Rally is available here. John Maurice discusses the buildings and their new names starting at about the 90-minute mark.)

The new cafeteria building will be called Alligood Commons, in honor of Phillip and Ora Jane Alligood.
