Churches in Eastern Kentucky will gather for “Together for the Mountains” from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. next Tuesday at the Appalachian Wireless Arena in Pikeville, Ky. The new summit aims to celebrate faith and fellowship with folks from across the region.
The summit—hosted by Jared and Bethany Arnett from New Beginnings Fellowship Church and Jon Weece from Southland Christian Church—seeks to encourage church members to gather to discuss ideas, plant innovation, and encourage outreach and community connections.
“We’ll be exploring how our faith translates outside the walls of the church [building] and what it looks like when we focus on being the church, instead of just having church,” according to the website for the event. “We’ll be looking at the intersection of God, his church, the community, and the future of our region.
Weece will speak on “The Importance of the Local Church in our Culture.”

The Milligan University men’s cross country team hosted and won the inaugural Eli Cramer Invitational on Friday. The event is named for Eli Cramer, the Milligan student-athlete who died when a car hit him during pre-race training for an event last year in Williamsburg, Va.
“Eli loved to race and there’s no better way to celebrate his legacy than having these Buffs line up and compete,” said Chris Layne, head coach of the No. 2-ranked Buffs.
The No. 1-ranked Milligan women’s team also won at the event.

Central India Christian Mission is asking for prayer, petition, and provision on behalf of Dr. Ajai Lall. Over the past several weeks, local agitators have been stirring up anger, making threats, and attempting to intimidate the leader of the mission. CICM shared this appeal.

Our friend Darrel Rowland, a journalist in Ohio for 45 years—31 of them with the Columbus Dispatch (until cutbacks in August)—received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Columbus chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists last month. In July, Rowland was the subject of a feature article in the Dispatch.
Rowland, a faithful member of Worthington (Ohio) Christian Church, has written several articles for Christian Standard over the past 20 years.

The Louisville Bible College Alumni Association will host the first LBC Family Reunion on Oct. 15. The event is open to former students (even those who have taken just one class), faculty, and staff. Guest speaker will be Bob Russell. There will be a Q&A segment, prayer, and a briefing by LBC president Kerry Allen. The free luncheon begins at 1 p.m. Donations will be accepted. Kentucky Christian University partnered with the Carter County Historical Society to conduct an archaeological dig at the site of a Civil War skirmish on a former plantation. KCU students assisted in excavation of the site not far from campus. During the dig they unearthed items like musket balls, nails, and pottery pieces. WSAZ aired a news segment on the dig. KCU’s Dr. Gerald Dyson, associate professor of history, served as excavation director.

Compassion Christian Church in Savannah, Ga., opened their doors to people fleeing from Hurricane Ian, and the church is prepared to help even more when the initial wave of people volunteering in Florida returns home, according to a news story on WTOC.com.
“People are grieving in Florida right now, but they’re in shock, right?” senior pastor Cam Huxford told the news station. “A couple weeks from now, that shock’s gonna wear off, and they’re gonna have to have solutions. So . . . we try to wait until we can assess where . . . we [can] make the biggest difference, and then get in there and help.”

The Christian Chronicle shared an article about Loretta Lynn‘s connections with the Churches of Christ. Lynn, a country music superstar who died Tuesday at age 90, wrote about being baptized as an adult in her 1976 autobiography, Coal Miner’s Daughter.
“I was real nervous because the Bible says you have to be immersed, and like I’ve said so many times, I’m scared to death of water,” Lynn wrote.

“Today it became clear to me that my personal Christian faith is not tolerated or permitted in the public square, at least by some and perhaps by many,” said Andrew Thorburn, who was forced to resign within 24 hours of being named chief executive of the Essendon Football Club after stories circulated that the church he leads in Australia is critical of abortion and same-sex relationships.
“Despite my own leadership record, within hours of my appointment being announced, the media and leaders of our community had spoken,” Thorburn said, according to abc.net.au. “They made it clear that my Christian faith and my association with a Church are unacceptable in our culture if you wish to hold a leadership position in society.”
