Around midnight on April 14, 1912, a massive failure occurred on a ship that was more than four city blocks long carrying more than 2,000 passengers, and an iceberg weighing an estimated 1.5 million tons.
The Titanic was the largest man-made moving object in the world, proudly sporting a gym, a pool, two libraries, and four restaurants. Dubbed โpractically unsinkable,โ less than three hours after hitting the iceberg, the ship lay in pieces below the surface of the Atlantic. The unthinkable happened; the unsinkable ship sank. With a limited supply of lifeboats, its passengers were left treading the cold waters.
Today the wreck of the Titanic sits on the ocean floor about 2.5 miles below the surface, a rusting monument to the fragility of life.
Each of us is an individual Titanic. We may, in our pride and self-sufficiency, think that we are uniquely grand and unsinkable. But each of us has already struck the iceberg of sin. Itโs only a matter of time. But wait. God has provided a lifeboat for anyone who wants to be rescued.
โFor God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal lifeโ (John 3:16, New International Version).
โAs for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air. . . . But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressionsโit is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus. . . . For it is by grace you have been saved, through faithโand this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of Godโnot by works, so that no one can boastโ (Ephesians. 2:1-9).
Have you called on Jesus to forgive your sins and lead your life? Then take this bread and drink this cup, and give thanks to God, who saves you through Jesus Christ your Lord!
