Literature and Teaching Ministries — Organization Profile
Literature and Teaching Ministries, also known as LATM, is a Christian publishing ministry based in Joplin, Missouri. The organization helps Christian leaders worldwide publish Bible-based, culturally relevant books in their own languages so people can find, follow, and serve Jesus. Its public theme is “Christian Books. World’s Languages.”
The organization’s core focus is partnering with church leaders around the world to publish Christian books in local languages for discipleship, evangelism, theology, apologetics, and church leadership. LATM states that billions of people do not have access to Christian books in their language and that people learn and retain information better in their own language. The ministry works to meet that need by helping leaders produce resources that fit their own language and ministry context.
LATM serves from Joplin, Missouri, with publishing partnerships reaching Christian leaders and churches worldwide. Its work includes projects in many world languages, with the ministry reporting more than 1,700 completed projects, 3 million books printed, and 102 languages represented. Its bookstore includes resources in languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Kurdish, Lisu, Malayalam, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Tamil, Ukrainian, Urdu, and many others.
The organization operates through a project-based publishing model. A church leader outside the United States contacts LATM with a book project that can help advance kingdom work in that leader’s language. LATM then partners with donors to raise needed funds, while the project is written or translated, edited, designed, and printed in the country where it is needed. The result is that people receive books in their language that help them study Scripture, grow as disciples, and serve their churches.
A distinctive part of Literature and Teaching Ministries’ work is funding and supporting in-country Christian publishing rather than simply exporting English-language resources. The organization’s history grew from College Press Publishing Company and Don DeWelt’s vision to provide true-to-the-Scriptures Bible study textbooks, then expand that concern to missionaries and national church leaders who needed quality Christian books in other languages. LATM was formally established in 1992 to pursue that purpose.
People can engage with LATM by donating, joining the Book Club, praying for projects, subscribing to updates, purchasing books, or connecting church leaders with the ministry. The Book Club highlights a new book project each month and has helped fund more than 500 book projects since 1994. Supporters can also give toward current publishing projects, receive World News updates, follow LATM online, and help make Bible-based resources available to churches in the world’s languages.
