The Chronicle of Higher Education reports that China sends more students to study in the United States than any other country””and some of them now study with Lincoln (IL) Christian University.

In 2008, LCU began partnering with the American China Civic Exchange to meet the needs of Christian students and churches in China. Today the school”s China Institute offers beginning English study, seminars, training classes, and summer camp experiences as well as two- and four-year college degree programs.

“We think of the China Institute as a gateway for these students,” says Dr. James Estep, dean of the school of undergraduate studies. “It”s an opportunity for them to visit the States and learn something valuable, and also a way we can visit and teach in their country.”

The institute”s English Language Academy introduces English-language beginners to the basics of speaking, writing, and reading, and offers insights into American culture to help them prepare for further academic studies in the U.S.

For students already proficient in English, two- and four-year degree programs include studies in business, education, music, philosophy, psychology, and also ministry-related majors and seminary study.

The school also hosts an “English and Character Summer Camp” for Chinese youth and their families, which focuses on conversational English skills, peer interaction, motivational activities, and character development. Participants explore friendships with Americans and enjoy tours of large cities including Chicago, Washington, D.C., and New York.

In addition, the Early Childhood Principal and Teacher Seminar surveys educational philosophy, administration, and professional development, and includes a visit to observe an American early childhood center.

“Because of the China Institute, we now have LCU students who are planning to minister in China,” Estep says. “We are friends with people we would otherwise not have met, and we”re working with churches we never would have known.”
