Whether you are a seasoned teacher or just starting to host a small group, I recommend the following resources for help with guiding students toward maturity in Christ (see Colossians 1:28):

eart-Deep Teaching by Gary Newton (B&H Academic, 2012) is a resource for teachers concerned about the lack of biblical knowledge and understanding among adults. Newton trains teachers about the process of learning so they can engage students to discover and obey God”s Word. His book is filled with practical ideas for preparing the heart of the teacher, designing deeper learning experiences, and structuring Bible lessons.
Effective Bible Teaching, 2nd ed., by James C. Wilhoit and Leland Ryken (Baker Academic, 2012) assists teachers in understanding the principles of biblical interpretation for the purpose of inductive Bible study. Through helpful examples and practical suggestions, Wilhoit and Ryken train teachers how to study God”s Word and then bridge the gap between understanding Scripture and applying it to life.
Community that Is Christian: A Handbook on Small Groups by Julie Gorman (Baker Books, 2002) is an engaging resource, whether the group you teach is large or small. Gorman provides insight for creating healthy communities that every teacher hopes to foster among members of a group, so they might follow Christ together.
The Essential Book of Teacher Tips from Standard Lesson Resources (Standard Publishing, 2012) is filled with insight from seasoned educators who address more than 50 different topics. Each brief but focused chapter gives ideas and action steps to address real-life situations and continue improving as a teacher.
