Snow Jobs. Develop a volunteer team who ministers especially during snowstorms. When the storm hits, team members grab their shovels, snowblowers, and chains, along with their four-wheel-drive vehicles, and head out to shovel walks, pull stuck cars out of ditches, and help anyone else in need. They can take along some hot chocolate and coffee as well for stranded motorists.
Skating with Grace. Rent out a skate rink and throw a free skating party for your community. Include refreshments, good music, and perhaps even some lessons. “Free Skate is a friendly witness to our community””and a great touch point for us,” says pastor Ernest Dow of Living Water Fellowship in Blyth, Ontario.
Resolution Helpers. In the beginning of the new year, unchurched people are often more interested in learning about spirituality, Christianity, and other faith matters. Offer a free six-week “Exploring Christianity” or “Investigating Spirituality” class at the church building. Answer questions such as “Who is Jesus?” or “What do different religions believe?” Promote the class in a local newspaper and encourage church members to invite friends. Offer top-notch hospitality, welcome new people, and provide an unpressured, open, and honest atmosphere.
Winter Survival. Put together winter survival kits and present them to neighbors, friends, and coworkers, or hand them out at shopping malls, football games, and other venues. The kit can include items such as lip balm, facial tissues, throat lozenges, hot chocolate or cider packets, and a card or flier from the church. Involve small groups, classes, and teams in the packing and giveaways.
