Okolona Christian Church (Louisville, KY) has been praying for Muslims for years, but last year the church created a new approach designed to connect more of its members””and it”s something your church can do, too.
“Previously we had coordinated 30 days of prayer initiatives, but last year we decided to hold a focused night of prayer on The Night of Power,” says Betty Byrd, vice president of prayer, operations, and personnel at Team Expansion (Lexington, KY) and a member at Okolona. The Night of Power, which commemorates the revelation of the Koran to Muhammad, is considered one of the holiest nights of the year for Muslims.
“We wanted not only to pray in a strategic way for Muslims and for the world”s mission fields, but also educate people about Islam,” she says.
To accomplish these goals, the church missions team created five interactive prayer stations, each with a different purpose and each including different activities and prayer suggestions. Station one, “A Call to Prayer,” included prayer rugs, facts about prayer in the Islam faith, and directions to pray for Muslims by lifting hands, kneeling, or even lying on the floor. Station two offered more information about the Night of Power, station three featured a map of the Muslim world and Scriptures showing God”s heart for the many nations in the world, and station four encouraged participants to pray for persecuted Christians. The experience concluded with station five, which reminded participants about the Great Commission and challenged them to make a commitment to pray, go, send, welcome, or mobilize.
