DCHS Building Dedication Set for Sept. 10

BETHANY, WV””The Disciples of Christ Historical Society has completed its move into a new facility in historic Bethany. DCHS”s new home is located adjacent to the grounds of the Alexander Campbell study and mansion and across the street from the Campbell cemetery.

The building was completed by renovating the Renner Visitor Center and adding an extensive archives room housing artifacts, portraits, institutional records, books, and journals from the early 19th century Restoration Movement to the present. A reading room, study carrels, and conference room provide space for research and meetings. Also, an outdoor hospitality area””the Peter and Lynne Morgan Gathering Place””is available for receptions, conversations, and relaxation.

dchs_JNIn celebration, a building dedication and blessing will take place at 2 p.m. (EST) Saturday, Sept. 10. Friends of the society from the three streams of the movement will gather to celebrate this historic event. Those unable to attend may still view the service at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/bethanywvadmin/.

After the dedication there will be a tour of historic sites in the Bethany area. The evening will conclude with the Kirkpatrick Lecture by Dr. D. Newell Williams, president and professor of modern and American church history at Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. His presentation, to take place in the Old Meetinghouse, will be “Stone-Campbell History: Past and Future.” Closing the evening will be a Communion service using 19th century Stone-Campbell Communion ware.

Sunday morning worship will take place at Bethany Memorial Church with Dr. Douglas A. Foster preaching. Foster is associate professor of church history in the Graduate School of Theology at Abilene (TX) Christian University, where he also serves as director of the Center for Restoration Studies.

The new address for the Disciples of Christ Historical Society is P.O. Box D, Bethany, WV 26032. The historical society was previously located in Nashville, TN.
