News Briefs

Central Christian Church in Wichita, Kan., honored local police detective and off-duty security officer Matt Young, 49, who died Oct. 1 after battling cancer. On Saturday, CCC hosted the funeral for Young, who served at the church.

“He’s just such a special guy ‘cause he didn’t just come in and do the job,” Darren McClintock, lead pastor at CCC, told KAKE. “He just exuded that care and that kindness and that desire to love and serve people. Ultimately, a lot of that came out of his faith in Christ, as well, because he saw Jesus as the ultimate servant, and I think you can see that in the way he cared for the kids and the people he served.”

Young had served at the Wichita Police Department since 2000. He and his widow, Laurie, have seven children and two grandchildren.

“We want to come and celebrate the life that Matt had, but also celebrate that this isn’t the end of his story,” McClintock said.
