Lifeline Christian Mission will host a “Million Meal Pack Marathon” April 24 through May 15 with the goal of packing 1 million meals across all four of its U.S. Lifeline Centres, including the newest ones in Lexington and Louisville, Ky.
“We are under construction right now,” Keri Owens, director of the Louisville Centre, shared with Christian Standard last week, “but I do see the light at the end of the tunnel, and we are hoping —praying—to soft launch the week of April 19.”
Then, beginning April 24, Owens said, “we will be open six days a week as we launch with [the] Million Meal Marathon. The goal is for all four centres to pack a container of food for a different location. The Louisville Ministry Centre will be partnering with Life in Abundance and packing a container of food for Kajiado, Kenya.”
Meal-packing events feature groups of volunteer participants (people of all ages and abilities) gathering to mix and weigh nutritious and tasty ingredients—rice, dried beans, and dehydrated vegetables—which are sealed in small plastic bags, packed in large containers, and shipped globally.
Over the years, these shelf-stable meals have been used in Lifeline’s ministry programs and shared with ministry partners around the world. They have been distributed as disaster relief and used in developing areas.
The Lexington Centre opened earlier this year. In March it conducted a major packing event with Southland Christian Church. Lifeline’s other U.S. centres are located in Columbus, Ohio, and Denver, Colo. (A fifth centre is in Calgary, AB, Canada.)
“We are excited to be launching the [Louisville] Ministry Centre with this three-week event,” said Owens. “We will have the capacity to have about 50 to 60 people packing at one time.
“After the three-week event, the Louisville Centre will be open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with a static schedule, but we can also accommodate private events and by appointment on other days.”
