International Disaster Emergency Service—better known as IDES—will celebrate 50 years of sharing help and hope worldwide on July 8 with an open house and a 5-kilometer walk and run.
The walk/run will begin at 8 a.m. that day at IDES’s Noblesville, Ind., headquarters. (Cost is $30.) The open house will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include a food pack to benefit people in South Sudan, along with live music, food trucks, and tours. Great Lakes Christian College recently reported it will complete the year with a budget surplus for the first time in nearly a decade. “The college began the current fiscal year anticipating a nearly $600,000 deficit,” the Lansing, Mich., college wrote at glcc.edu. “Targeted budget cuts, modest increases in tuition and room and board, and the exceptional generosity of churches and individuals have made it possible to complete the year with a small budget surplus.”

The International Conference On Missions is planning seven pre-conference training sessions in Oklahoma City in the hours leading up to the 2023 gathering. Most of the pre-conference sessions will take place during the day on Nov. 16, but two of them meet on both Nov. 15 and 16. Learn more here.

The 171st Northwest Christian Convention will take place in Turner, Ore., June 27 to July 2. The theme, “Through the Church,” is based on Ephesians 3:10-11. Main speakers will be Dr. Melisa Ortiz Berry, assistant professor of history and world Christianity at Bushnell University, and Dr. John Mark Hicks, professor of theology at Lipscomb University. As May ended, Dr. David B. Burks stepped down as chancellor of Harding University in Searcy, Ark., and assumed the role of president emeritus. Burks served two stints as president of Harding (1987–2013 and 2020–22) and two stints as chancellor (2013–20 and 2022–23). In total, Burks has served Harding for 56 years in various capacities. He is a 1965 alumnus of the private Christian, liberal arts university.

Firefighters and paramedics recently used the former location of Crestview Christian Church, Manhattan, Kan., for a two-day training exercise. The Mercury ran several photos of the training exercise, while also reporting the building is scheduled to be demolished later this summer. Crestview’s last Sunday at its old building was March 14, 2021. The church now meets at 3940 Excel Road.

The Berkeley Independent recently shared a new history of the Betaw Christian Church, St. Stephen, S.C., which dates to the 1880s. Interestingly, the church joined with another church in the mid-1940s but decided to “try again” and resumed meeting independently in the mid-1950s.
