The Alexander Christian Foundation—a non-profit ministry helping provide scholarships for students in Indiana who are preparing for the ministry by studying at one of our Bible colleges—is planning a 60th anniversary celebration in May.

The event will take place at 3 p.m. May 5 at Southport Heights Christian Church, Southport, Ind. (in Greater Indianapolis). The speaker will be Dr. Daniel Overdorf, president-elect of Johnson University (Knoxville, Tenn.). Special guests will include Dr. Frank Weller of Great Lakes Christian College (Lansing, Mich.) and Dr. David Fincher of Central Christian College of the Bible (Moberly, Mo.). Refreshments will be provided.

“Since our inception, over 950 students have received scholarships through the generosity of others,” said Tom Scott, ACF president. “It is amazing to see how God has used those recipients to spread the gospel message around the world.”

Johnson University President Tommy Smith shared a post addressing his health situation last week via the school’s Facebook page

“As I announced last year, I have polycystic kidney disease, a genetic disorder that ultimately results in kidney failure,” Smith wrote. “In order to focus on my health needs, I announced my retirement from the presidency at the end of June of this year.

“I have been approved for a kidney transplant through the Vanderbilt University Kidney Transplant Center.

“A living donor is the best path forward for a kidney transplant. I am writing this message in anticipation that someone would be interested in becoming my living donor. If so, please click on the link below to start the process and learn more . . .”

One of Christian Standard’s original backers in the mid-1860s was James A. Garfield, a U.S. congressman and future president. In 1881, just a few months into his presidency, Garfield was assassinated by a disappointed and delusional office seeker.

Netflix recently announced that producers are working on a miniseries about Garfield.

Death by Lightning is a drama series that brings to life the epic and stranger-than-fiction true story of James Garfield, reluctant 20th president of the United States, and his greatest admirer Charles Guiteau—the man who would come to kill him,” Netflix.com wrote.

Michael Shannon (for the record, not former Christian Standard columnist and educator J. Michael Shannon) will star as Garfield. The series will be based on the book, Destiny of the Republic. Production is yet to begin.

Big Little Churches

“A church with only 12 members is barely a church, but almost every weekend I preach in small Missouri churches whose attendances range from 12 to 112,” Daniel Schantz writes. “When people hear that I am preaching at such small churches they often shake their heads and say, ‘That’s a shame. Why don’t they just close the doors and go to a bigger church that has more to offer them?’” . . .

Long-Tenured Pastors Say Love Is Key to Their Staying

What does it take to pastor a church for the long haul? Christian Standard posed this question to Bob Stevens who has served with Allensburg Church of Christ in Ohio for 40 years; Jerran Jackson, 44-year minister with Clarksburg (Indiana) Christian Church; and David Simpson, pastor with Lanier Christian Church in Georgia for 48 years. . . .

THROWBACK THURSDAY: ‘Barton W. Stone—Champion of the Word’ (1962)

Sam Stone wrote in 1962, “If the early leaders of the Restoration movement are like men engaged in a race, it might be said that Barton Warren Stone took an early lead, but was later passed by Alexander Campbell.” Sam Stone contended that Barton Stone was deserving of greater appreciation . . . and he did so by presenting this “survey of his life.” . . .
