(Originally posted Friday, March 6; updated Monday, March 9) Alive Nashville, a Stadia church plant that started last September, had been meeting on Sundays in a building that was “ground zero” for the tornado that struck East Nashville early Tuesday. Since the storm, the church has been working to serve one another and others in the neighborhood devastated by the tornado. Compiled by Chris Moon Calvary Christian Church in Winchester, Ky., is ramping up for the little league basketball season one year after the church helped rescue the sports program after the closure of the community’s YMCA. Calvary Christian is one of several churches sponsoring Upward 40391, a Christian-based basketball and cheerleading program. The program came into existence after the Winchester YMCA closed in late 2016. “We were breaking down barriers and coming together for the cause of the kids,” CCC’s lead pastor Mike McCormick told the Winchester Sun. From July 4-8 and July 11-15, Christ in Youth (CIY) is leading “Engage the City,” an opportunity for students to serve victims of last month”s tornado in Joplin, Missouri, and learn from the community”s leaders. “CIY will organize projects, programming, housing, meals, materials, and leadership to help these groups best respond to the needs of Joplin,” the organization writes. “There will be outlets to serve but, more importantly, your students will have opportunities to connect with storm survivors and hear their stories.
