Of the four Gospel writers,รย Luke is the one who gives the historicalรย details and setting of Jesus”รย birth. With careful research andรย guided by the Holy Spirit”s inspiration,รย he records the wonderful newsรย of Christ”s birth and how those whoรย first heard about it were called toรย rejoice. No doubt Luke interviewedรย Mary, Jesus” mother, in preparing toรย write it (Luke 1:3; 2:19).
The Baby”s Birth
Luke 2:1-7
Caesar Augustus issued a decree thatรย a census should be taken of the entireรย Roman world. The Romans were theรย dominant world power when Jesusรย was born. By using the emperor”sรย name and a specific event in hisรย reign, Luke established the accuracyรย of his account. A. T. Robertson noted,รย “Papyri and inscriptions have confirmedรย Luke on every point in theseรย critical verses (2:1-7).”ย
All the people went to their placeรย of ancestral origin to have theirรย information recorded. This meantรย going to the city where their forefathersรย had settled when Joshuaรย divided the land years before (Joshuaรย 13-18). Joseph went up from . . . Nazarethรย . . . to Bethlehem. He and Maryรย went up in elevation, but down inรย direction, coming from the northernรย region of Galilee to the southernรย area called Judea. Bethlehem,รย the town where David was born (1รย Samuel 17:12; 20:6), is located aboutรย six miles south of the capital city,รย Jerusalem. Luke does not tell usรย how much time elapses betweenรย the arrival of Mary and Joseph inรย Bethlehem and the birth of Jesus.
The travelers could find no roomรย available where they could stay thatรย night. This is not surprising sinceรย many others were probably returningรย for the census as well. Mary gaveรย birth to her firstborn, a son. By describingรย Jesus as Mary”s “firstborn,”ย Lukeรย obviously suggests that she had otherรย children later (see Matthew 12:46).รย The infant was placed in a feedingรย trough used for animals. It couldรย have been located in a barn or cave.
The Angel”s Message
Luke 2:8-14
The nearby fields were in the sameรย region where David cared for sheepรย when he was growing up. Someรย of the present flocks could haveรย included the very lambs that wouldรย soon be offered as temple sacrificesรย in Jerusalem. The shepherds tookรย turns watching the sheep throughoutรย the night, protecting them fromรย thieves or predatory animals.
Suddenly the angel of the Lordรย appeared. Unlike the messengerรย sent to Zechariah and Mary, thisรย angel is not named. The Shekinahรย (bright cloud) glory symbolized theรย Lord”s presence (Exodus 24:16; Isaiahรย 6:1-3; Matthew 17:5). The shepherds”รย reaction was that of almost everyoneรย who sees an angel”โimmediateรย and great fear (see Luke 1:12;รย 1:30; 24:5). “I bring you good news thatรย will cause great joy for all the people.”ยรย “Good news”ย comes from the rootรย word that gives us “gospel.”ย Insteadรย of naming Bethlehem, the angelรย identifies it as “the town of David.”ย Jesus would later be known as theรย “Son of David,”ย with all its Messianicรย significance. This is the only placeรย in the Synoptic Gospels where “Savior”ยรย is used in reference to Jesus.รย Later Paul used the term frequently,รย since it would be more meaningfulรย to Gentiles than “Messiah,”ย a Jewishรย term.
Suddenly a great company of theรย heavenly host appeared with the angel.รย This was too great an รย announcementรย for just a few angels to make.รย Something this significant calls forรย “a great company”ย”โa large band ofรย heavenly messengers (1 Kings 22:19).รย First they offered glory to God inรย the highest heavens (Psalm 148:1).รย Then they heralded the good newsรย to mankind. Jesus had been predictedรย to be the “Prince of Peace”ย (Isaiahรย 9:6).
The Shepherds” Journey
Luke 2:15-17
When the angels left, the shepherdsรย quickly decided to go intoรย Bethlehem. They were eager to witnessรย this รย miraculous event personally.รย They . . . found Mary and Joseph,รย and the baby, who was lying in theรย manger. Everything was just as theรย angels had told them. After theyรย found Jesus, they spread the word!รย The shepherds have been called “theรย first evangelists.”ย They told theirรย good news to everyone. How couldรย they not do so? Like the lepers inรย Samaria, they found such news tooรย good to keep to themselves (2 Kingsรย 7:9). People were impressed not onlyรย because of what was said but alsoรย because of who said it (compareรย Acts 4:12).
