Of the four Gospel writers,ร‚ย Luke is the one who gives the historicalร‚ย details and setting of Jesus”ร‚ย birth. With careful research andร‚ย guided by the Holy Spirit”s inspiration,ร‚ย he records the wonderful newsร‚ย of Christ”s birth and how those whoร‚ย first heard about it were called toร‚ย rejoice. No doubt Luke interviewedร‚ย Mary, Jesus” mother, in preparing toร‚ย write it (Luke 1:3; 2:19).

The Baby”s Birth
Luke 2:1-7
Caesar Augustus issued a decree thatร‚ย a census should be taken of the entireร‚ย Roman world.
The Romans were theร‚ย dominant world power when Jesusร‚ย was born. By using the emperor”sร‚ย name and a specific event in hisร‚ย reign, Luke established the accuracyร‚ย of his account. A. T. Robertson noted,ร‚ย “Papyri and inscriptions have confirmedร‚ย Luke on every point in theseร‚ย critical verses (2:1-7).”ย

All the people went to their placeร‚ย of ancestral origin to have theirร‚ย information recorded. This meantร‚ย going to the city where their forefathersร‚ย had settled when Joshuaร‚ย divided the land years before (Joshuaร‚ย 13-18). Joseph went up from . . . Nazarethร‚ย . . . to Bethlehem. He and Maryร‚ย went up in elevation, but down inร‚ย direction, coming from the northernร‚ย region of Galilee to the southernร‚ย area called Judea. Bethlehem,ร‚ย the town where David was born (1ร‚ย Samuel 17:12; 20:6), is located aboutร‚ย six miles south of the capital city,ร‚ย Jerusalem. Luke does not tell usร‚ย how much time elapses betweenร‚ย the arrival of Mary and Joseph inร‚ย Bethlehem and the birth of Jesus.

The travelers could find no roomร‚ย available where they could stay thatร‚ย night. This is not surprising sinceร‚ย many others were probably returningร‚ย for the census as well. Mary gaveร‚ย birth to her firstborn, a son. By describingร‚ย Jesus as Mary”s “firstborn,”ย Lukeร‚ย obviously suggests that she had otherร‚ย children later (see Matthew 12:46).ร‚ย The infant was placed in a feedingร‚ย trough used for animals. It couldร‚ย have been located in a barn or cave.

The Angel”s Message
Luke 2:8-14
The nearby fields were in the sameร‚ย region where David cared for sheepร‚ย when he was growing up. Someร‚ย of the present flocks could haveร‚ย included the very lambs that wouldร‚ย soon be offered as temple sacrificesร‚ย in Jerusalem. The shepherds tookร‚ย turns watching the sheep throughoutร‚ย the night, protecting them fromร‚ย thieves or predatory animals.

Suddenly the angel of the Lordร‚ย appeared. Unlike the messengerร‚ย sent to Zechariah and Mary, thisร‚ย angel is not named. The Shekinahร‚ย (bright cloud) glory symbolized theร‚ย Lord”s presence (Exodus 24:16; Isaiahร‚ย 6:1-3; Matthew 17:5). The shepherds”ร‚ย reaction was that of almost everyoneร‚ย who sees an angel”โ€immediateร‚ย and great fear (see Luke 1:12;ร‚ย 1:30; 24:5). “I bring you good news thatร‚ย will cause great joy for all the people.”ยร‚ย “Good news”ย comes from the rootร‚ย word that gives us “gospel.”ย Insteadร‚ย of naming Bethlehem, the angelร‚ย identifies it as “the town of David.”ย Jesus would later be known as theร‚ย “Son of David,”ย with all its Messianicร‚ย significance. This is the only placeร‚ย in the Synoptic Gospels where “Savior”ยร‚ย is used in reference to Jesus.ร‚ย Later Paul used the term frequently,ร‚ย since it would be more meaningfulร‚ย to Gentiles than “Messiah,”ย a Jewishร‚ย term.

Suddenly a great company of theร‚ย heavenly host appeared with the angel.ร‚ย This was too great an ร‚ย announcementร‚ย for just a few angels to make.ร‚ย Something this significant calls forร‚ย “a great company”ย”โ€a large band ofร‚ย heavenly messengers (1 Kings 22:19).ร‚ย First they offered glory to God inร‚ย the highest heavens (Psalm 148:1).ร‚ย Then they heralded the good newsร‚ย to mankind. Jesus had been predictedร‚ย to be the “Prince of Peace”ย (Isaiahร‚ย 9:6).

The Shepherds” Journey
Luke 2:15-17
When the angels left, the shepherdsร‚ย quickly decided to go intoร‚ย Bethlehem. They were eager to witnessร‚ย this ร‚ย miraculous event personally.ร‚ย They . . . found Mary and Joseph,ร‚ย and the baby, who was lying in theร‚ย manger. Everything was just as theร‚ย angels had told them. After theyร‚ย found Jesus, they spread the word!ร‚ย The shepherds have been called “theร‚ย first evangelists.”ย They told theirร‚ย good news to everyone. How couldร‚ย they not do so? Like the lepers inร‚ย Samaria, they found such news tooร‚ย good to keep to themselves (2 Kingsร‚ย 7:9). People were impressed not onlyร‚ย because of what was said but alsoร‚ย because of who said it (compareร‚ย Acts 4:12).
