Studies show more than a quarter of American adults are divorced or raising children alone. Yet surveys indicate only 5 percent of single parents attend church regularly. What can the church do to reach single moms?

One congregation has thrown baby showers for single moms-to-be. The goal is to show love to someone struggling and unsure of God”s love in a difficult time. Women from the church cook, plan games, and act as hosts at the event.

The Single Moms Ministry at McCook (Nebraska) Christian Church started a new Bible study group and handed out fliers at places like day cares and women”s shelters. “We wanted to reach the ladies we could really minister to,” says church member Kim Tietz.

Some churches have developed ministries specifically designed to help single moms, such as free car repair and donations of cars that are fixed up and given to moms in need. Here are other ideas for how individuals, groups, or churches can minister to single moms:

“¢ Provide free child care so a single mom can get out with friends or just have some down time.

“¢ Make her a home-cooked meal and have it ready for her when she gets home from work.

“¢ Pay for a manicure, pedicure, massage, or other pampering.

“¢ Offer to clean her house, do her grocery shopping, or mow her lawn (as just a few examples).

“¢ Help her children make appreciation cards or do something special for her.
