Spiritual MRI
Spiritual MRI

Have you ever had an MRI? An MRI produces detailed pictures of internal body structures. It can assist in diagnosing many things we never want to face: aneurysms, inner ear issues, spinal cord injuries, cancerous tumors, and more. A prescribed MRI makes us cringe because we don’t want anything “bad” exposed, though all the while, in our gut we already know something is wrong or we would not have sought the help of a physician.

An MRI can diagnose, but it cannot cure. The physician is who leads you through the healing process.

The apostle Paul once confronted the church of Corinth because, among other things, there was tremendous dissension among the believers, which poured over into their times of worship, including the Lord’s Supper. Some Christ followers believed God favored them more than others. Some chose to eat only with those they liked, and some gorged themselves, leaving others with nothing.

Paul instructed,

Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep (1 Corinthians 11:28-30).

Before taking the Lord’s Supper, a spiritual MRI is in order. Examine yourself by asking questions such as these: Where, according to God’s Word, have I missed the mark? Is it my attitude? Do I have a sinful pattern that is making me sick? Have I acted with integrity in all ways? Do I have any relationships, especially within the church family, that need to be reconciled?

Spiritual MRIs constantly reveal our desperate need of a Savior and Great Physician who can heal the deepest parts of our being. Examination produces humility, so we can come in peace and unity as the church to eat together knowing God does not favor any one of us, but, instead, favored all of us when he allowed Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. Take of the bread and the juice confidently and with great thanksgiving because the things revealed in your spiritual MRI have already been accounted for by Jesus Christ.

Thanks for this thought on Communion; I plan on sharing it with our church this week.
