Ministries Responding to Needs in Quake-Stricken Haiti

by | 20 August, 2021 | 0 comments

It’s been almost a week since a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, killing more than 2,000 and injuring and displacing countless others. The earthquake and Tropical Storm Grace, which arrived two days later, have left the poor island nation in urgent need of food, medicine, and other assistance.

A survey of Christian church ministries serving Haiti shows that many are lending a hand. All of the ministries listed below have provided updates.

We’ll list these ministries alphabetically and provide a few sentences about their earthquake response. In nearly every case, you can click on their Facebook link for additional information, along with photos. Most of these ministries also have provided earthquake recovery donation information.

Christianville Mission—Haiti: [Posted early this week] “Our Haitian leadership has been able to send a team to the affected areas. They’ve returned with firsthand information and met this morning with more of our Haitian staff to draft a plan for ways Christianville and our local churches can serve those hurting and in need.” (Facebook)

FAME: “A specific prayer request for Haiti! Tomorrow (August 21) this shipping container [right], seen here tagged and locked up in Indianapolis, will arrive in Port in Haiti. Please pray for it to be released, and then to be able to travel to a FAME Partner Hospital—not in the epicenter of the Earthquake, but in a position to distribute medical equipment and supplies to the les Cayas and receive patients. Pray for open roads!” (Facebook)

• Global Vision Citadelle Ministries: “Your donations are helping people like Pastor Bertrand make necessary repairs to his church and meet basic needs like food and shelter for those hurting in his community. Thank you for all the support we have received so far!” (Facebook)

• Haitian Christian Ministries: “Thank you to all who have reached out to check on HCM during the last several weeks through the assassination [of Haiti’s president], earthquake, and tropical storm. We appreciate the prayers and support. We have been in touch with our Executive Field Director in Haiti and our staff is safe as are our pastors of the church plants.” (Facebook)

• Haitian Christian Mission: A physician named “Dr. Ted” flew into Port Au Prince on Wednesday morning. He was met by a truck loaded with surgical supplies and a traveling team of surgeons and nurses from Higgins Brothers Surgicenter for Hope. They traveled south over the mountains to Les Cayes and the earthquake area, where they are helping at a hospital that was not damaged by the earthquake. Their help has been a great relief to the hospital’s tired and worn-out staff. (Facebook)

• Haitian Christian Outreach: [Posted on Wednesday] “Rescue efforts continue. . . . Tens of thousands of homes, schools, churches, and other structures have been destroyed. Authorities are trying to repair roads so supplies and equipment can reach the epicenter.

“Roads are impassable or washed away. Flash floods and landslides have made rescue efforts difficult. There is flooding on our main campus in Peredo and many homes in the area have been damaged. The dorms on campus are full of water from leaking roofs. The roads to Jacmel are impassable and the rivers have cut off access to Cyvadier. Many of our hospital staff cannot get to the hospital from Jacmel.

“Local medical professionals are working hard to coordinate first response efforts. HCO is mobilizing orthopedic surgeons and emergency medicine doctors to join the efforts in order to help relieve those first responders. . . .”  (Facebook)

IDES (International Disaster Emergency Service): “IDES’ partners in Haiti are . . . assessing the earthquake damage and coordinating their needs with us. They are beginning to provide emergency relief and making plans for the future. IDES has already sent significant emergency funding [$60,000 to 6 partners on Monday] for immediate needs and is continuing to make funds available as plans are developing.

“Partners report:

– Lack of shelter supplies (tarps, tents, roofing, plywood etc). Numerous . . . people are being forced to sleep on the ground without any sort of shelter or bedding.

– Need for food and water (IDES sent a shipping container of almost 260,000 GAP [God Always Provides] meals which is en route to one of our partners to offer immediate relief)

– Need for medical supplies and care

– Need for hygiene supplies

“Many of the previously blocked roads have been cleared allowing some of our partners to begin sending doctors, nurses, and ministers into the hardest-hit areas to establish emergency triage clinics. . . .

“Please be in prayer for those who are suffering. Pray for IDES and our partners as we provide much needed relief.” (Facebook)

• KORE Foundation: [Earlier this week] “KORE farmers & staff came to the campus today to help boil 36,000 eggs to help meet the needs of the earthquake victims.

[Thursday] “We are honored to partner with and support local Haitian organizations working in Agriculture during this time. 2,300 pounds of peanut butter is headed out to provide relief to earthquake victims!” (Facebook)

Lifeline Christian Mission: “Lifeline Haitian leaders have already visited 3 communities near the epicenter to deliver emergency relief supplies for hundreds of people. Today [Friday], they are visiting 2 more communities to assess needs. Your gifts are making a difference. Thank you!” (Facebook)

Northwest Haiti Christian Mission: “We were recently blessed with 3,700 jars of peanut butter for our Mole Campus! If this earthquake is anything like last time, those who lost their homes will head up north looking for refuge with relatives. If so, then we fully anticipate another swelling in our communities from those who will now be displaced. This peanut butter will be more of a blessing than we ever realized!” (Facebook)

Sonlight Ministries: [Posted early this week] “Haiti needs your urgent and faithful prayers. Her people are resilient, but there’s only so much they can handle. Our American staff is en route back to Haiti today and tomorrow—please pray also [for] their them and their families.” (Facebook)

White Fields Overseas Evangelism: [Posted early this week] “Our work in Haiti and our friends are all safe. Please pray for Haiti.” (Facebook)
