Christian Standard

By Edwin White

“Seeing then that we have a High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Heb. 4:14-16 (New King James Version).

When Isaiah saw a vision of God on a throne high and lifted up with the heavenly beings giving him their praises, he trembled in fear. When the people of Israel stood at the foot of Mt. Sinai, saw the fire descend upon the mountain, heard the thunder roll, felt the earth tremble and quake, and heard the voice from heaven speaking the words of the Ten Commandments, they trembled with fear and asked Moses to speak to God for them. They were afraid that if they continued hearing his voice, they would perish.

Because Jesus came to live among his people and share our infirmities, we can know not only his awesome majesty and glory, but also his wonderful compassion and overwhelming love. Because of Jesus we can easily learn to love our Heavenly Father.

This passage from Hebrews tells us we can approach God in the name of Jesus and know we will be received as his own dear children. This is a blessing which should lead us to rejoice and praise him for His loving kindness. As we come to the table of the Lord to observe the Lord’s Supper, let us remember with thanksgiving and praise the One who made it possible for us to know the love of our Heavenly Father. He lived among us and died for us so we could enjoy a wonderful fellowship with both the Father and the Son. Praise him as we observe the memorial meal together.
