Inspired by Nehemiah, Church Repaints the Walls

For several years, Journey Christian Church (Greeley, CO) has helped meet a number of needs at nearby John Evans Middle School, from volunteering at sports events and feeding needy families to providing school supplies and coordinating an annual Christmas party for students.

After studying the book of Nehemiah, lead minister Arron Chambers and the church began praying about a “great work” (Nehemiah 6:3) they could begin this past July.

Just a few weeks later, when the John Evans principal asked Chambers if church members could paint the school”s hallways and cafeteria, he knew the church had found its project. The school is in a very challenging situation, Chambers writes on his blog; not only is it old and in need of many repairs, but it may be torn down and rebuilt in a few years, so the administration has had no luck securing maintenance funds from the state. The interior of the building has not been painted in more than a decade.

Journey purchased hundreds of gallons of paint and primer, and church members signed up to paint, provide food, and care for the children of other volunteers. Kids cleaned baseboards while adults covered lockers, lights, vents, and doors with paper and painter”s tape. A prayer team walked the halls of the school throughout the week, praying for students and teachers, and another group wrote Scriptures on all the walls before painting.

On day three, members from two other area churches joined the Journey team, including several from the Spanish-speaking congregation Amanecer Cristiano.

“Thanks to the mighty hand of our God, John Evans Middle School is now covered in the Word of God,” Chambers writes. “Even though we covered over the hundreds of Scriptures we wrote on the walls, we are expecting God to do a mighty work on that campus because his Word shall not return to him empty.”
