On February 17, 2|42 Community Church (Brighton, MI) opened its new community building, a renovated athletic club which includes space for children”s programming, new soccer fields and basketball courts, a café, and more.

On February 18, the church launched its School for the Arts.

“We added one large studio and three smaller spaces for music, drama, and art classes,” says Rachel Dummitt, director of the school. “We started with private guitar, piano, drum, flute, cello, violin, and voice lessons, drama classes for kids, and visual art classes in portrait drawing and pastels.”

Dummitt says about half of the instructors are 2|42 members.

“Of course, we hope someday the ones not already plugged into the church will choose to attend,” she says. “Although I didn”t require teachers to be Christians, I was open about our desire to help people in their spiritual walk. But we”re not requiring them to open lessons with prayer!”

The classes are open to all ages, with two group guitar classes and private piano lessons for adults, and the school plans to add lessons in dance and the culinary arts.

“Our café director loves to come up with interesting recipes, and we”re excited to give him more opportunities,” Dummitt says. “But we”re adding those classes after he”s had a chance to open the new café.”

The initiative is part of the church”s “Thru47″ program focused on living out all of Acts 2:42-47 with goals for healthy growth, development of new facilities, and the launch of a church planting movement in Haiti.
