Church Hosts 18 Different Camps for Kids (plus News Briefs)

Summer has been a little more fun this year in Independence, KY.

Nicholson Christian Church is hosting 18 different children’s camps throughout the summer for kids in the community. The camps are dedicated to such things as volleyball, engineering, woodworking, scrapbooking, basic first aid, tae kwon do, “Whodunnit,” food decorating, basketball, archery, Legos, dance, music, and soccer.

The church is also hosting a weeklong theater camp for kids of all ages that will culminate in a production of the Broadway musical Mary Poppins at 7 p.m. this Friday.

NEWS BRIEFS

Cincinnati Christian University hosted a celebration in honor of Professor Dan Dyke’s retirement. Dyke served as a full-time faculty member at CCU for 30 years.

Grangeville (ID) Christian Church senior pastor Harold Gott, who has served with the church for more than 19 years, and his wife, Linda, a ministry assistant, are retiring. The church held an open house honoring them on Sunday. The Boise Bible College graduates previously served with Sisters (OR) Church of Christ. The Idaho County Free Press wrote a nice article about the couple last week.

Ozark Christian College of Joplin, MO, announced that Rick Cherok will teach church history and U.S. history at OCC beginning this fall. Cherok most recently served as professor of church history at Cincinnati Christian University.

Stadia president Greg Nettle and his wife, Julie, are planning a 50-mile trek on the Salkantay Trail in Peru in July in an effort to raise $150,000 to plant new churches to help care for children in some of the most impoverished parts of Southern Asia. Learn more here.

Steve Scheibner was guest speaker at Northfield Church of Christ in Fort Dodge, IA, recently, according to The Messenger newspaper. Scheibner, a pilot, originally was scheduled to fly American Airlines Flight 11 on September 11, 2001, before a last-minute substitution put another pilot in his seat. The plane was hijacked and crashed into the World Trade Center. Scheibner is a retired commander with the U.S. Navy and also a retired pastor.

Why We Stayed is a new book by 13 noninstrumental church of Christ writers who have felt frustrated, disenchanted, and discouraged at times, but have chosen to remain with that fellowship of churches. The Christian Chronicle reviewed the book earlier this month.

Indian Creek Christian Church in Indianapolis hosted the “Made Known” event that supports families who have suffered from infertility, adoption loss, pregnancy loss, and infant loss. Individuals had the chance to talk with others who had experienced the same kind of loss.

The Center for Church Leadership at Cincinnati Christian University will host an e2: effective elders training event on “What’s Next” on Sept. 8. “Gary Johnson, David Roadcup, and Jim Estep will present how to form a forward thinking leadership team through three main sessions, as well as address a variety of issues confronting today’s church in six elective breakout sessions.” Click here to register.

Historic Canton, Ohio, Church to Open New Campus

After two years of strong growth, First Christian Church in Canton, Ohio, is expanding. The historic church—once led by P. H. Welshimer—hopes to open its first campus location this fall. The church in November spent $2.1 million on a 33,000-square-foot building on 5 acres on the southwest side of Canton. . . .

StoneBridge, IDES Helping with Tornado Recovery in Omaha Area
