SCJ Conference Plans for 2020 Announced

The 19th annual Stone-Campbell Journal Conference will take place at Johnson University Tennessee in Knoxville next March 20, 21. The theme “Politics and the Stone-Campbell Movement” will be developed by featured speakers Shaun Casey, director of the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and Public Affairs and professor in Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service; Jess Hale, attorney with the Tennessee General Assembly; and Richard Cherok, professor of history with Ozark Christian College.

Casey will present “The Impact of Stone-Campbell Ideals: My Life in Political and Public Service” and “The Office of Religion and Global Affairs under Barack Obama: My Perspective.” Hale will present “Disciples at Public Tables: A Public Servant’s View of SCM Engagement with Public Policy.” Cherok will present “Citizen Campbell: Alexander Campbell and Early American Politics.”

Related papers or papers on other biblical, theological, or historical topics are sought for parallel sessions from experienced scholars as well as from student scholars. Send your paper title (no abstract needed) to Jeff Painter, conference parallel paper coordinator, at [email protected] no later than Dec. 15.

The first 35 paper topics submitted are guaranteed a slot, after which availability will be limited.

Student paper competitions will occur in three categories: Junior/Senior; MA/MDiv; and Restoration (Isaac Errett Award from the Disciples of Christ Historical Society). Contact Les Hardin ([email protected]) immediately to indicate your interest and to obtain the competition rules (also available on the SCJ website) for the undergrad and grad competition, and also receive information on the $2,500 scholarship available to both undergrad and grad winners. For the Isaac Errett competition, contact Newell Williams ([email protected]). The winner receives a cash award. Submissions are due January 6.

Registration for the conference opens January 20, 2020.
