Johnson University has received a $1 million grant from the Lilly Foundation to help establish the Three Rivers Collaboration to guide congregations in the Knoxville, Tenn., area in a process of refining their God-given mission within a changing cultural context. Mark Nelson, a 1987 Johnson graduate who has served as lead pastor of The Crossings in downtown Knoxville, which he planted in 2007, will join Johnson’s staff as executive director of TRC. By Jim Nieman A women’s group at a church of about 35 in Rogersville, Tenn., started a ministry in 2016 that has grown like, well . . . a pile of laundry. On Monday, Johnson University (Knoxville, TN) and Florida Christian College (Kissimmee, FL) officially merged and became part of the newly established Johnson University System. A few weeks ago we shared West Towne Christian Church“s (Knoxville, TN) partnership with Northwest Haiti Christian Mission (Zionsville, IN) to frame three buildings for Haitian churches. This week, West Towne is partnering with a less conventional organization””the Ole Smoky Mountain Moonshine distillery in Gatlinburg, TN. Church member Stephen Chen came up with the idea during the church building project when NWHCM shared the need for five-gallon buckets with handles. Chen”s son works at the distillery, which gets more than 100 of these buckets each week to ship moonshine-soaked cherries. “So far, West Towne has made three trips to Gatlinburg,”
