Sullivan First Christian Church is doing what it can to help its Indiana community respond to and recover from a tornado that killed 3 in Sullivan County and damaged or destroyed more than 200 structures over the weekend.

“We have a few families in our church who have total loss of their home and a few others with damage to repair,” senior pastor David Cox told Christian Standard. “While no one who is currently active in our church has died, we do have one family who lost two family members.”

Via their Facebook page the church reported, “The Salvation Army is partnering with Sullivan First Christian Church to provide hot meals for survivors, first responders, [and] volunteers, utilizing the mobile canteens.” Meals are served from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The church also is serving as a staging area to provide resources and supplies for those who need them. To that end, FCC is partnering with another faith-based organization.

“We decided Sunday to partner with Convoy of Hope to distribute some basic clean-up essentials to those who are fortunate enough to still have a home,” Cox said Tuesday morning. “The process with Convoy moved fast and they delivered a semi truck load of supplies to us last night, and right now we have about 40 to 50 volunteers who are staged to distribute the items as needed.”

The rig is parked in the church’s back parking lot and items are being distributed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday this week.
