An Open Letter to Chris (a new freshman just arriving on a state college campus)

By Gretchen Magruder   Dear Chris, I have this friend named Apryl whose father seemed to enjoy embarrassing her in front of her teenage friends when she was growing up. As they would leave the house, he”d yell “helpful” reminders: “Remember who you are!” “Remember where you”re going!” “Remember how to get home!” Chris, as you begin this four-year (or longer) journey, these reminders are well worth considering.   Remember Who You Are Going to college is a privilege. According to a Harvard study, just 6.7 percent of the world”s population earns a college degree.1 Take the opportunity seriously””go to

Ten Ways You Can Strengthen Campus Ministry

By Mark A. Taylor Every year we publish a directory of campus ministries like the one in this issue. Every year we include stories of dynamic, life-changing influence provided by these ministries. And every year I learn something new about outreach to young people forgotten or ignored by too many local churches. Obviously, many Christian churches and churches of Christ care about taking Christ to college students. Could we do more? Look at my list, and decide for yourself. 1. Choose a ministry. From our directory, find a campus ministry either (a) close to your local church, (b) on the

Here They Come . . . and There They Go

By Mike Armstrong College campuses across the country will soon be flooded with the next class of new students. Also arriving will be thousands of the most promising students from around the world, with more than half of these coming from the world”s least-reached nations. Both American and international students will arrive with dreams and plans for their college careers and their futures. But what most will not realize is that when they arrive on campus, God is already there. Many of these students will encounter God in ways that will change their lives. Saying “hello” to these new students

Why We Serve

His father, Gerald Sr., was a charter member of the board and put the family farm up as collateral for the first campus house. John Strouse served on the board of directors for Christian Student Foundation at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, from 1969 to 2005. His wife, Lois, was secretary of the campus ministry for 26 years. Melody Hornickel also serves with Christian Student Foundation at Ball State. She and her husband, Russ (an alumnus of the campus ministry), attend

I Majored in Pushing God Away

By Shane Taylor It was 1988 and the end of my second year at the state university. My prodigal journey took all sorts of twists and turns, mostly while I was under the influence of Budweiser and the liberal arts department of the secular campus. For me, college was an opportunity to rid myself of the flannelgraph stories from Sunday school lessons of bygone days. My dorm room was littered with dirty laundry and stacks of unread textbooks. I majored in procrastination and pushing God away. And yet Jesus loves to interact with people who push him away. The Gospels

Proper Care and Feeding of Campus Ministry Graduates

By Gretchen Magruder Dear local church, Let me introduce you to some new members headed your way! My friends have just graduated from college and are looking for a new community to join. They are excited about finding a place to jump in and serve, and will be checking you out over the next few months as they transition from college life to (hopefully) gainful employment. Everyone wants to be known. I know they look young, but please don”t assume they”re with their parents or that they”re just going to be around for a short time. Ask them to tell

Campus Ministry Is Critical!

By Justin Wallace My story begins in a rural town in central Indiana. I grew up under the tin roof of a log cabin, listening to my grandmother’s tall tales. All the grandkids would pile into feather beds, laugh, listen, and learn. There were several nights I would like awake after everyone was asleep and listen to the wind howl, my cousins snore, and the acorns fall from the trees onto the tin roof over our heads. Years later, God began speaking through the cadence created by acorns on that tin roof. Each acorn falls as an individual; alone and

A Book Like No Other

By Ward Patterson For 65 hours one October several years ago, students at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, read the Bible aloud at a crossing in the heart of the university campus. Standing under a tent and reading into a microphone in 30-minute shifts, they read from Genesis to Revelation. Erica Wothen, a senior student and member of His House Christian Fellowship, led more than 200 students in the event. Erica said, “We came together to read the Word. We didn”t worry about what we would say or do. We just read and watched God move.” God”s Word

Campus Ministries”“A Strategy for Spiritual Growth

By Mark A. Taylor As we have for several years now, this week we”re publishing a directory of all the campus ministries supported by Christian churches and churches of Christ across the United States and around the world. Although these congregations pour millions of dollars into Christian colleges and universities, we do well also to remember the ministry on secular campuses indicated by the listings in this directory. Our support of campus ministries will include financial gifts, of course, but that”s only a beginning. Many of them eagerly look for involvement by local churches. Frankly Speaking

by Ben Simms Some Ohio State University students thrive on hot dogs as they hang out in the early morning hours on High Street in Columbus. For several years now, Student Christian Fellowship has been giving away free frankfurters at what it calls FFF (short for “Free FrankFurters”).   More than Hot Dogs Christian minister Steve Sjogren says, “Small things done with great love will change the world.” This is really the point of free frankfurter night. The hope is that, at some point in a student”s life at OSU, getting a free hot dog will trigger a conversation

The Good Life of a Campus Minister

By Ward Patterson I”ve got a friend who keeps me humble. He thinks campus work is a breeze. He is always telling me that anybody looking from the outside would think a campus minister has it pretty soft.  I keep telling him he ought to look on the inside. THE PROBLEM OF TIME “You really have it good,” he says. “But there is this problem of time,” I respond. “The kids are tied up with something pretty awful””class, I think they call it. The only time they can get together seems to be after supper, at 7:00 say, or

Campus Ministries”“Something Special

By Mark A. Taylor It was a typical college visit, the kind high school students across the land make in their junior and senior years. But something special happened at this one. To get a real feel for the school she was visiting, this student stayed overnight in the dorm. That evening her host invited her to a get-together on campus, a Bible study sponsored by the Christian campus ministry there. Later her parents smiled as they spoke about their daughter”s positive experience with the group of Christian students and the campus minister she met. Christian parents of new college

Engaging the University

By Buzz Roberts What is going through the minds of today”s college students? What motivates them? What has been their experience with the church and fellow Christians? If we could hear their thoughts, what would they reveal? In recent conversations with collegians about God, Jesus, and Christianity, I heard the following: – “Jesus was a good person.” — “I don”t believe in God.” — “I”m not sure if God exists.” — “Christians are hypocrites.” — “I”ve had a bad church experience””I”m not going back.” David Kinnemen and Gabe Lyons share insight into the hearts and minds of students in their new

The World at Our Doorstep

By Sheree Shih I grew up in Taiwan, thousands of miles from where I am now . . . both geographically and spiritually. After finishing college in Taiwan, I was accepted as a graduate student at the same school. As I was checking out the school Web site, I noticed an exchange student program with Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas, U.S.A. I convinced my parents to let me take advantage of this golden opportunity by telling them it would be the most economical way of studying overseas. ACQUAINTED WITH CHRISTIANS The application process went well, and I came to
