One Mission Society โ Organization Profile
One Mission Society, also known as OMS, is a global Christian mission organization focused on multiplying disciples, churches, leaders, and missionaries through evangelism, discipleship, church planting, and missionary mobilization. Founded in 1901 as The Oriental Missionary Society, OMS began in Japan through the work of Charles and Lettie Cowman, Ernest and Julia Kilbourne, and Japanese evangelist Juji Nakada.
The organization is based in Greenwood, Indiana, and serves in more than 85 countries through missionaries, national workers, volunteers, church partners, and global ministries. OMS describes its work as โengaging the one to reach the many,โ with an emphasis on training a nationโs sons and daughters to reach their own people for Christ and then partner in reaching others.
OMS operates through a multiplication strategy. Its public materials describe four central areas: multiplying disciples through evangelism and relationships, multiplying churches through church planting, multiplying leaders through training methods such as Train & Multiply, Seed Sowers, and New Village Church Planting, and multiplying missionaries through mobilization efforts such as the 125 by 125 initiative. This strategy reflects the organizationโs focus on locally rooted Christian witness that develops indigenous leaders and churches.
The organizationโs ministries include long-term, mid-term, short-term, and internship opportunities, along with Embark, a 1- to 12-month cross-cultural mission experience primarily for college-aged young adults. OMS also supports church partners, global projects, prayer resources, missionary sending, theological education, community ministries, and field opportunities in regions such as Africa, Asia-Oceania, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and North America.
OMS also participates in broader collaborative efforts, including Billion.Global, a network launched from the vision of former OMS president Bob Fetherlin. Its public resources include Outreach magazine, the Global Impact Report, prayer guides, One Mission Radio archives, missionary stories, and opportunities to support missionaries and projects. These resources help churches and individuals stay connected with the missionโs work across different countries and ministry contexts.
People can engage with One Mission Society by praying, giving, supporting missionaries, giving to projects, applying for mission service, exploring internships, connecting with a missions coach, inviting OMS to speak, or partnering as a church. Its distinct contribution is a long-standing interdenominational mission movement that equips local believers and cross-cultural workers to form Christ-centered communities around the world.
