Dedication to a Change

During the first few years of marriage, Faith and Abraham traveled to Southeast Asia several times, worked to prepare their sending churches, and gained further training. When they were prepared to live full time in Southeast Asia, God gave the couple an opportunity they had not expected in a city they had not visited.

From Jaded to Joyful

Brian Jennings I knew how the game worked. Someone would walk into our church office, request to speak to a preacher, ask for prayer, and then tell a dramatic story of misfortune. They needed money and they needed it now. Their sister was dying of cancer in Nebraska. Their job interview started in 20 minutes on the other side of town. Their friend betrayed them and they needed a hotel for just one night. Each new crisis dealt me two options: cruelty or gullibility. Would I shun compassion or stewardship? The scenario repeated daily. The issues of poverty defeated me.

Breaking the Link from Poverty to Prison

By T.R. Robertson Prison life is easier than life on the street for many in our country”s poor population. By understanding and taking effective measures to address poverty, we are helping to solve the crime problem as well. Here are some basic understandings and ideas. Until she went to prison, Janie said, she had never in her young life been sure she would get to eat three meals in any one day and have a bed to sleep on at night. Born into the make-do culture of generational poverty, the only “meals” she”d ever known consisted of whatever food could

40 Under 40: Trevor DeVage

TREVOR DeVAGE Lead minister,  Christ”s Church at Mason,  Mason, Ohio I was thrilled when I heard my friend Trevor DeVage had been named the new lead pastor at Christ”s Church of Mason. I believe Trevor is going to have a deep impact in the Greater Cincinnati area for many years to come. Trevor is among the most gifted proclaimers of the gospel in our brotherhood today. I served alongside him for nearly a decade and was blessed by his teachable spirit, and was able to see firsthand the countless people Trevor led to the Lord. His commitment to biblical preaching, his contagious

Planting Churches, Sponsoring Children

By Jennifer Johnson In 2011, church planting organization Stadia (Irvine, CA) partnered with Compassion International and Ecuadorian and U.S. church partners to plant four new churches in Ecuador. In 2012 they”re starting another dozen churches. Compassion offers its child sponsorship program and other initiatives through each church, and Stadia Executive Director Tom Jones estimates more than 4,000 children will be helped through the work by the end of this year. In January, Compassion President Wess Stafford asked Stadia to expand the ministry into other South American countries. While continuing to plant churches in Ecuador, Stadia plans to start two churches in

KORE””Chicken Coops and More in Haiti

By Dennis Bratton KORE Foundation is a unique ministry that pursues sustainable solutions to extreme poverty within the Christian community of Haiti. One billion people in the world””and half the population of Haiti””exist on $1 a day or less. Extreme poverty is simple to define, but it is hideous to behold. It is debilitating. It does not allow dreams or hopes. It strikes and crushes the most vulnerable on earth. It is time for the church to consider a reasoned Christian response to this destructive burden. Jesus acknowledged economic realities in his ministry (Luke 4:16-30). He offered care for both
