According to the definitions in The Oxford English Dictionary, the word scholar can describe anyone from a person who reads or writes well to someone well acquainted with the Greek and Latin languages. In other words, scholarship is often in the eye of the beholder. And the meaning of the word has changed throughout history. In the Elizabethan period, for example, it referred to university graduates who could not find employment in a professional field but sought to make a living by writing.
