IDES is working to provide aid and help relieve suffering in Syria and Turkey resulting from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck on Feb. 6. The Christian disaster response ministry has provided aid to more than 20,000 people. It has been working through two partners in Turkey and one in Syria. . . .

Christian agencies have mobilized to try to help earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria, but an urgent need exists for financial contributions so that more people can be helped sooner. The world is currently dealing with a refugee crisis. More people have been displaced forcibly from their homes in recent years than at any other time in history. An unprecedented 65.3 million people around the world have left their homes. Among them are 21.3 million refugees who have crossed international borders seeking refuge, with more than half of them under the age of 18. As a result of conflicts and persecution, nearly 34,000 people are forcibly displaced every day. We have no equivalent to country singer Lee Greenwood”s song “God Bless the U.S.A.” with its nationalistic and stirring refrain, “I”m proud to be an American where at least I know I”m free.” All that said, a news flash popped up in my Twitter feed a few months ago that made me extraordinarily proud of my country. Originally tweeted by Neville Park, this message quickened this Canadian”s pulse: “MEANWHILE IN CANADA: Syrian refugees arriving. If you”re like me, your answer may be, “Nothing.” Although none of us alive when terrorists attacked the U.S. September 11, 2001, will ever forget the day, we don”t dwell on it; we may not even think much about that horror from the past.
