Before the COVID-19 pandemic, minister Matt Dabbs might have spent his Sunday mornings before church straightening chairs and vacuuming the carpet.

Today, he gets out his leaf blower to dry the dew off the grass in his backyardโ€”because thatโ€™s where the church meets.

โ€œMy neighborhood is my church,โ€ he said.

At the start of the pandemic, Dabbs was minister of Auburn Church of Christ in Alabama, a congregation that saw more than 300 worshippers each Sunday.

The pandemic, of course, closed the doors of the church building for a time, and Dabbs began recording his sermons ahead of time to distribute to the congregation digitally.

But then something unusual happened. Dabbs inadvertently launched a new church.

โ€œWe decided all the isolation wasnโ€™t really good for us,โ€ he said. โ€œAnd we had a number of neighbors who were interested in meeting on Sunday for worship.โ€

Backyard Church was born.

EARLY ON
The first gathering of people in Dabbsโ€™s backyard consisted of about a dozen neighbors. People wore masks and socially distanced. But then the gatherings started to grow.

Some neighbors heard the church singing, or they heard the messages from their own backyards. Some signs went up in the neighborhood pointing the way to Dabbsโ€™s house. Dabbs let the homeownersโ€™ association know what was going on.

โ€œWe were kind of noticing as we put the church in the neighborhood, it drew neighbors, which was great,โ€ he said.

The church grew to such a point that Dabbs opted in October 2020 to resign his position at Auburn Church of Christ to lead Backyard Church full time. The Auburn church was just getting back into the pews, but Dabbsโ€™ heart still was with the church in his backyard.

To shutter the latter likely meant many of those folks would be left without a place to worship. They werenโ€™t the types to gather with an established congregation.

โ€œWe would be leaving people behind,โ€ Dabbs said.

Today, 60 to 70 people attend Backyard Church each week, with 40 to 45 regulars.

The church has established itself as a nonprofit organization, and it has raised funds to keep operating.

MOVING FORWARD
A friend who had just taken a class in prospectus design organized the churchโ€™s fundraising prospectus, and another friend who teaches a college class about such things offered to design it. Another person offered to do the churchโ€™s 501(c)(3) planning for free.

โ€œItโ€™s pretty cool to watch how God lines things up,โ€ Dabbs said.

Now, Backyard Church is looking to expand, hoping to add a second โ€œbackyardโ€ or two this year. The goal will be to keep each backyard gathering relatively small.

โ€œWe really value participation,โ€ Dabbs said.

Each church service is interactive, with discussion questions sprinkled in here and there. The bigger the gathering gets, the less participatory it can be.

Looking back, Dabbs said he is glad for the change in perspective God has given him through Backyard Church.

โ€œMy whole life, Iโ€™ve driven by homes to get to church,โ€ said Dabbs, who also serves as editor of Wineskins.org. โ€œNow I donโ€™t do that. Church is here.โ€

He said his neighborhood and his church formerly were separate things. Relationships in one didnโ€™t necessarily bleed over into the other. But now they do.

โ€œThereโ€™s a whole harvest of people living around me,โ€ he said.

โ€œGod is so powerful. Put him to the test. Donโ€™t hold back on the vision,โ€ Dabbs advised. โ€œEven for a more established church, God has all the means. It has really been touching how God has backed us up.โ€

Amen! Homestyle, the kind Jesus loves to visit. We have followed this “house church” growth since 2011 and look forward to more followers opening their homes and tables to share and care for our neighbors. Restore the simple Gospel without all the traps and designs of men’s wisdom. Acts 5:32 We have a “Wonderful Counselor” to speak to guide. Our model for homestyle meetings is “prayer and fasting,” select humble shepherds, and love one another, bearing each other’s burdens. We are amazed how some of these small groups are finding the great truths of God just as the Restoration Movement did in its early days. Pray the groups find humble shepherds to lead them. Discover there is no need to look like the divided denominational world in buildings, finances or staff. Grow where you are planted.

If we want to reach all the reachable people we will need thousands of backyard churches and coffee shop churches and restaurant churches and house churches. Over half the population is now “uninvitable”–they will never come to a more traditional church but many of them are open to Jesus.

God is moving. COVID19 has brought disruptions. But God always has a plan and a way to reach other’s and spread his gospel for those who want a relationship with him. We continue to pray for one another and all ministries.
