The Silent Giant

September 17, 2026

A once-powerful radio transmitter becomes a picture of Christโ€™s willingly surrendered power and the enduring message we hear at the Lordโ€™s Table: love, forgiveness, and grace.

The Voice That Still Reaches Us

A once-powerful radio transmitter near Cincinnati offers a striking picture of power deliberately held back. At the Lordโ€™s Table, we remember Jesus Christ, who willingly laid down his power in sacrifice so that the message of forgiveness could reach every listening heart.

  • Jesus willingly gave his body and blood for us.
  • Christโ€™s sacrifice continues to speak across every generation.
  • Communion invites us to hear again the message of love and forgiveness.

By Quentin Davis

In the hills north of Cincinnati stands a silent giant. In 1934, engineers fired up the most powerful commercial radio transmitter the world had ever seenโ€”half a million watts, built to blanket a continent with one clear voice. For a few short years it thundered across the night sky, reaching farther than any station before or since. Listeners as far away as New England and the Rocky Mountains heard the same broadcast, crystal clear. It was even thought to be able to reach China. Then regulators stepped in. The signal was too strong; it interfered with others. The mighty transmitter was ordered reduced to a fraction of its power. On March 1, 1939, the great voice was silenced. The equipment was preserved, a towering reminder of potential never again unleashed.

A Voice Deliberately Quieted

As we come to this table, we remember another voice that was deliberately quieted.

Jesus Christ, the Word through whom the universe itself was spoken into being, held all power in his hands. Yet on the night he was betrayed, he took bread and a cup and gave them to his disciples with these words: โ€œThis is my body, given for you. . . . This cup is the new covenant in my blood, poured out for you.โ€

He who could have called ten thousand angels chose instead to be broken. He who could have filled the earth with irresistible glory allowed himself to be limitedโ€”to a cross, to a tomb, to a single moment in historyโ€”so that his message of forgiveness could reach every listening heart without overwhelming our freedom to respond.

The Grace That Still Broadcasts

The superpower radio stands unused today, its full strength held in check. But the sacrifice of Christ is not held back. Though his body was given once, the grace it purchased still broadcasts across every generation. The blood he poured out still speaks louder than any earthly interference.

So come. Take the bread. Receive the cup.

In these humble elements we remember the greatest power the world has ever knownโ€”the power that was willingly laid down so that you and I could hear the clearest message of all: โ€œYou are loved. You are forgiven. You are Mine.โ€

Let us eat and drink, and in the quiet of this moment, hear again the voice that still reaches farther than any station ever could. Amen.
