Longtime Minister, NCC Educator Dr. Richard Brown Dies

Dr. Richard E. “Dick” Brown, 86, who served many years as professor and academic dean at Nebraska Christian College, died peacefully, with his wife by his side, at Atlantic (Iowa) Specialty Care on April 17, 2024.

He was born in Clearfield, Iowa, and graduated from Bedford (Iowa) High School in 1956. He earned a BA from Nebraska Christian College, an MA and an MDiv from Lincoln Christian Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.

He ministered with churches in Orchard, Neb.; Akron, Iowa; Fowler, Ind.; and Council Bluffs, Iowa, before serving as a professor, and eventually, academic dean of NCC, for more than 20 years. He served the final 20 years of his career preaching at First Christian Church, followed by Peace United Church of Christ, both in Norfolk, Neb. In retirement, he continued to serve the local church as a Sunday school teacher and small group leader. His daily prayer was, “Lord, may I continue to be of use to you in some way today.” 

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marie Brown; three children, Michelle Carter, Jim Brown, and Amy Smith; one sister; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter. 

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Council Bluffs. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.
