The State of Campus Ministry: An Interview with David Embree

By TR Robertson David Embree has led Christian Campus House at Missouri State University in Springfield for 41 years. I talked to him about the state of campus ministry, past, present, and future. QUESTION: Why is campus ministry important? ANSWER: As Charles Malik [former president of the United Nations General Assembly] said back in the ’60s, if you want to impact the world, impact campuses. Eighty-five percent of kids from our churches go to non-church-related schools; [it] is going to be one of the most challenging intellectual and spiritual experiences of their lives. We need to be the church on

Campus Ministry at the Crossroads

By T.R. Robertson “Missionaries have long known you don”t need permission to preach the gospel,” says Lance Tamerius, “You just need a little more savvy.” Tamerius is director of the Christian Campus House at the University of Missouri in Columbia. Like many other campus ministries, CCH is taking steps to change the way it pursues God”s mission in the face of rapid changes in the culture of secular campuses nationwide. Diversity and Discrimination at Missouri Several years ago the University of Missouri asked all student organizations to sign a nondiscrimination covenant. “At that time,” Tamerius says, “we talked with our board

Proclaiming Release: Captives Caught by “˜Felt Needs”

By T.R. Robertson Shortly after our arrival at the prison chapel, the two-way radios crackle with the announcement: “Release Christian Campus House to the chapel.” Within minutes a few dozen offenders, as we”re told to call them, come walking across the central prison yard. We actually call them by their first names. We make a point to learn and remember their names, since no one else here offers them that courtesy. The courts have mandated the prisoners” freedom to practice their chosen religion. The weekly chapel schedule is filled with a wide variety of offerings in 10 different “fully accommodated”

The “˜Real World” After College: The Spiritual Care and Feeding of Twentysomethings

Three young adults show why traditional, typical approaches to reaching them may not always work.    By David Embree   Ben Metzger grew up in a small town where his family was active in a tight-knit, Bible-believing church. Before he even moved into his college dorm room, his congregation”s youth leaders connected him with a campus ministry where he developed close friendships and studied the Word of God intently.  As a part of the campus ministry, he went on mission trips and led small groups that helped younger students face the spiritual and intellectual battles of the university experience. Ben enjoyed the “college-age”

God Loves an Honest Question

By Brandon Smith Everything changed on March 20, 1998. I was a sophomore in college and had just arrived home for the weekend when my parents, red-eyed and somber, broke the news that would forever change my life. “Carrie is dead. She was killed in a car accident this afternoon.” Carrie and I had been dating since high school. In “normal time,” that was only three years. But in “high school and college relationship” time, it was an eternity. We had a healthy relationship, even surviving the long distance between us while she finished high school and I started college.

Abide in My Word

By Brandon Smith A move from the big city to the small town changed him””over time. And it taught him something about how we become more like Christ. I know a big-city kid who grew up in Denver, Kansas City, Indianapolis, and Omaha. The activity and opportunity afforded by such bustling municipalities were woven into the fabric of his being. So you may understand his uneasiness at the prospect of moving to rural northwest Missouri in an answer to God”s call five years ago. But he packed his boxes and moved his family to a quaint community of 10,000. He

One Man”s Changing View from an Ugly Couch

By Brandon Smith The epiphany occurred on an ugly couch in our ministry center””a couch that resembled one my grandmother had in her living room. I was leading our college students through the first verses of Philippians. As usual, the apostle Paul had begun his letter with a prayer: “And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best” (Philippians 1:9, 10). Wait a minute. “What is best“””not “what is good” or “what is helpful.” We must be able to

More Than 120 Years . . . and Counting

By Greg Swinney About This Article Long-term ministries tell a story. Nearly two-dozen campus ministers with the Christian churches/churches of Christ have served in campus ministry for more than 20 years (many in the same location where they started). It”s not because they couldn”t find jobs elsewhere . . . it”s because they have a deep-seated passion, a burning in their hearts for the students who walk the concrete sidewalks of the academic jungle we call the state university. This article draws upon more than 120 years of combined experience of four of these campus ministers. Roger Songer, campus
