When Dr. Paul H. Alexander assumes the presidency of Hope International University in August, he will become the first alumnus of the institution to serve in that role. Alexander has been selected to succeed Dr. John L. Derry as president by HIU’s board of trustees. Alexander will begin serving as the institution’s seventh president on Aug. 16, upon Derry’s retirement. A presidential inauguration at the school in Fullerton, CA, is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 17. “I consider Paul one of my best friends and have had the privilege of working closely with him for nine years in his role as

Unnoticed Hero

By Jessi Holland  With a daughter off at college and a son in the Navy, a mother with an empty nest started on an unexpected journey. Ruth Anne Shattuck offered to teach eighth-grade boys with her husband, Dan, at Chapel Rock Christian Church in Indianapolis. Soon after, they were asked to serve as sponsors on the church”s first youth mission trip to Portugal. The year was 1989.  “I was so ready to do this,” Ruth Anne said. “I”d been on a plane. I felt so prepared. I felt like the Lord wanted me to go on this particular trip.”Â Â  But

Collaboration: The Key to Strength

By John Derry President, Hope International University, Fullerton, California In 2008, I wrote an article for CHRISTIAN STANDARD called “The Future of Christian Church Colleges.” At that time, I anticipated challenges for our schools as they responded to changing demographics, new technology, and increasing accountability demands from government regulation and accreditation agencies. Shortly after the article appeared that March, our country entered the Great Recession. Virtually every industry was affected: banking, automotive, manufacturing, housing, retail, construction, health care, social services, and many others, including higher education. It created a new pressure point exacerbating financial challenges that were already severe. A 2012

Many Resources””Use Them Well!: Resources for Bible Teaching (Part 4)

By Caleb Kaltenbach My favorite tool for sermon writing is Logos Bible Software. As far as the exegesis of a sermon, nothing can beat it. Logos works quickly and has multiple resources within the program. Not only that, you can download the program onto your smartphone, enabling you to access Logos no matter where you are. A couple of years ago I joined PreachingToday.com. Some of the best illustrations I”ve used (that aren”t personal) come from this great website. It costs a little each month, but it is worth it. Type in your passage and you”ll find many illustrations to choose from.

Here”s What”s Happening at Our Christian Colleges

By Staff We asked colleges and seminaries associated with Christian churches and churches of Christ to provide updates on what”s happening at their institutions. Here”s what they had to say (these are listed alphabetically): Alberta Bible College The Rock is a new first-year program designed to ignite a new generation! While it provides students with classical foundational knowledge and practical ministry experiences, a new ingredient is various types of coaching designed to help students discern where “their deep gladness meets the world”s deep need” (Frederick Buechner). In other words, the goal is to help students discern who and where God

Why Attend Christian College? 26 Schools Give Their Answer

By Staff Alberta Bible College Calgary, Alberta, Canada It”s not for everyone, but you might consider attending Alberta Bible College if: “¢ You enjoy learning in the way that you learn! To learn to ride a bicycle, you ride a bicycle. To learn to serve Christ, you serve Christ. Experiential learning at its best . . . without academic compromise . . . that”s ABC! About one-third of ABC grads successfully complete graduate programs, others “hit the ground running” in various ministry pursuits, and still others transfer into other programs, taking their ministry formation experience with them. “¢ You don”t

Campus Ministry: A Beacon of Light

By Lee Snyder Every fall, I watch them arrive. In the last days of August, parents come to leave their son or daughter in our tender care, part of new crop of freshmen at our university. Eager to explore their new world, they meet roommates, check out the gym, and find the local coffeeshops. Mom and Dad may shed tears when they leave the parking lot and see the university dormitory in the rearview mirror. They know a secret: they are saying good-bye forever to their child. Twelve weeks later, the boy or girl who comes home at Thanksgiving will
