Six churches combined to raise almost $190,000 this year for International Disaster Emergency Service (IDES) Harvest of Talents hunger projects. Over the past 39 years, Harvest of Talents events have generated $4.3 million to combat world hunger. Any individual or church can participate.

First Capital Christian Church, Corydon, Ind., is providing its Church Anywhere services to Branchville Correctional Facility via GTL tablets, a device specifically made for those who are incarcerated. The device allows prisoners to maintain contact with family, receive educational training, and participate in religious services. “Our ministry is based on building relationships,” Church Anywhere lead pastor Tyler Sansom told WBIW.com. “We use the technology to begin and foster those relationships with the people inside the walls. Despite the pandemic, this year’s “Harvest of Talents for World Hunger,” a unique ministry started in 1984 by Lincoln (Ill.) Christian Church, raised more than $100,000 to combat hunger around the world. Each year, people in and around Lincoln use their talents for cooking, crafts, art—whatever—to create items that are sold at events and auctions to raise money for Harvest of Talents. All of that money is routed to International Disaster Emergency Service (IDES), which distributes those funds to mission partners that request it to feed starving people. By Jim Nieman Jeremy Nunes, known for his “front porch” brand of stand-up comedy—humor that’s “clean enough that you don’t have to take it to the back porch”—will perform free shows at 5 and 7 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 28, at Lincoln (Ill.) Christian Church. The shows will be filmed and then shopped to three TV networks that have expressed interest. “My first special, 17 years into comedy!” says Nunes, who has appeared on NBC, Fox, PBS, and Comcast, among other networks. He explains that Funny & Amen Productions will produce and film the show and create a master file.

Compiled by Chris Moon Central Church of Christ in Portsmouth, Ohio, is preparing to break ground on a new worship center. The structure will replace the church’s longtime home that was built in 1912 and later expanded. “The building . . . is in really bad shape,” the church explained on its website. The church’s new building will be constructed in the parking lot of the existing structure and will house the church’s worship services. When disaster struck, churches knew they could trust IDES to manage the gifts and ensure every penny went to the designated cause. Today IDES is still a “top of mind” organization for charitable giving, especially in response to earthquakes, floods, and other natural disasters, and as much as 70 percent of its ministry is facilitating these gifts. It is a partnership with International Disaster Emergency Services (IDES) based in Kempton, Indiana, that has sent money and food to hungry people around the world since the mid-1980s. When it first started in 1984, it included only the Lincoln church family (from toddlers to seniors), along with residents of local nursing facilities and shut-ins.
