By Tyler McKenzie  Did you know that in the past century at least three countries outlawed the public recitation of Mary’s Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55)?  • Before the end of British rule over India, the Magnificat was prohibited from being sung in churches.   • In the 1980s, the Guatemalan government banned it because they believed Mary’s words provoked revolutionary zeal.  • And the military dictatorship that ruled in Argentina from 1976 to 1983 also banned the Magnificat. Tom Blackeagle, Who Led NMC in 2002, Dies (Plus News Briefs)

Tom Blackeagle, who ministered with McKinley Church of Christ for a decade and with the Yakima Indian Reservation and surrounding area (in Washington state) for many decades, was killed in an auto accident in Toppenish, Wash., on Nov. 20. Mr. Blackeagle served as president of the National Missionary Convention—forerunner of ICOM—in 2002 in Wichita, Kan.

Imagine being an eyewitness to Jesus’ final days on earth: his entry into Jerusalem, his celebration of Passover with his followers, his trial, death, burial, resurrection, commission, and ascension. Try to put yourself there as part of the crowd or one of his followers or even one of his detractors on the dusty streets of the Holy City. In this issue, we provide nine character studies of people who witnessed these historic events. None were the main characters in Jesus’ passion, but all were vital to the story.
