By Michael C. Mack As sailing is a partnership between man and nature, spiritual growth is a collaborative effort between you and God. The term for Spirit is the same for that of wind in both the Old and New Testaments. The Holy Spirit is the wind that provides the driving force of all spiritual growth. You cannot bring about spiritual growth in your own life or the lives of those you lead, but neither are you a passive bystander. As the Holy Spirit moves, you must become engaged in that driving force. As a small group leader or teacher,

We asked 35 Christian leaders, “Who is the influencer with the biggest impact on your life and ministry?” Most of these leaders listed several influential thinkers, writers, innovators, and leaders more of us should get to know. This response is from Jon Weatherly, professor of New Testament and dean of the School of Bible and Theology, Johnson University, Knoxville, Tennessee. ________ When I enrolled as a student at Cincinnati (Ohio) Christian University, Roy H. Mays III, then a young staff member, became a vital mentor to me, and he remained so long after I graduated. Roy lived with an exceptional generosity of mind and heart.

We asked 35 Christian leaders, “Who is the influencer with the biggest impact on your life and ministry?” Most of these leaders listed several influential thinkers, writers, innovators, and leaders more of us should get to know. By Dean C. Collins (From our series “The Best or Worst Advice I’ve Ever Received.”) My late friend and mentor Smith Lanier gave me my best advice. He once told me: “I have learned that whatever God gives you in life, you must hold with open and loose hands. Never clinch your fist around his gift. Whether he gives you money or an idea, a talent or property, you must remember that everything is really his and he gives it to be used for his purposes.” Dean C. Collins serves as president with Point University, West Point, Georgia.

By Mark A. Taylor Young adults may lead the way in social networking, but their hours with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram don”t help all of them feel connected. In fact, among Americans today, the youngest adults are most likely to say they”re still looking for a friend. The Barna Group reports 20 percent of Americans describe themselves as lonely, up from about 10 percent just 10 years ago, “a paradoxical reality in the full swing of the social media age.” In that same decade, the number of Americans “trying to find a few good friends” has increased from 31 to

By Mark A. Taylor As we assembled this issue about mentoring, I received word that my most effective mentor, Charles E. Stiles, had passed away. Mr. Stiles was alumni director at The Cincinnati Bible Seminary (now Cincinnati Christian University) while I was a student there. I am one in a long line of young people he directed toward the ministry. Before he assumed the Bible college job, in his local church and Christian service camp ministries, he had touched the lives of dozens who serve faithfully today. At CBS he created the school”s outreach tool, the Come Alive Singers. We
