Lesson for December 31, 2017: Faith to Unite (Ephesians 4:1-16)

Dr. Mark Scott wrote this treatment of the International Sunday School Lesson. Scott teaches preaching and New Testament at Ozark Christian College, Joplin, Missouri. This lesson treatment is published in issue no. 50″“53 (December 10-31, 2017) of The Lookout magazine, and is also available online at www.lookoutmag.com. ______ By Mark Scott  Historians would have to critique this, but perhaps the world is more polarized than ever. On the eve of a new year can we say that the world is united in anything but sin? Sadly, the church is not much better. The answer to the divisive tensions in the world, and to the

Grief: A Solitary Journey

By Jim Tune It was a gray, cold, miserable February day when my father died rather suddenly after a few days of hospitalization for respiratory problems. This month marks five years since his death on February 5, 2011. I miss him and still grieve his loss. It”s a different kind of grief now””not so raw or hard-edged. I miss him on holidays when we celebrated family traditions and rituals. And the February anniversary can still be difficult. It”s possible that the short, dark days of our Canadian winter contribute to my sense of melancholy. Nonetheless, arriving at the five-year mark

Father Knew Best

By Don Wilson (From our series “The Best or Worst Advice I”ve Ever Received.”) The best advice I ever received in ministry was from my father. We would talk on the phone every Saturday morning, and the last thing he would say to me was, “Love your wife and preach the Word.” Those words have helped me remain faithful to my wife for over 45 years and preach at the same church for more than 32 years. Don Wilson serves as pastor of Christ”s Church of the Valley, Peoria, Arizona.

Describing the giftedness of a man like Ian in just 200 words is very difficult, because he has such incredible bandwidth and influence in both the spiritual and secular arenas. His exhaustive passion and love for God drives him to succeed. He has a depth of knowledge and an understanding of the Bible and of the millennial culture like few people I know.

Interview with Jerry Harris and Rodney Roberts

By Brad Dupray In his 11 years as senior pastor at The Crossing, a five-campus church with a home base in Quincy, Illinois, Jerry Harris has seen the church grow from 230 to more than 4,000. That growth did not come without challenges, but The Crossing is “clicking on all cylinders” and a year ago was listed as the fastest-growing megachurch in the United States among those in Christian Standard”s megachurch issue. A large part of The Crossing”s success can be attributed to the relationship Jerry has established with his elders. Jerry, along with Rodney Roberts, an elder at The
