A ‘Rip Van Winkle Faith’ Won’t Work

In 1974, Christian Standard introduced a column called “Reflecting on the News!” The concept was straightforward, allowing much latitude for the writer. Today’s article by John Greenlee from October 1974 references “the expression of concern which came this summer from Lausanne, Switzerland.” That seems a rather vague reference to a newsworthy event, especially 45 years hence. Here’s a little background. The International Congress on World Evangelization—sometimes called Lausanne I, the Lausanne Congress, or Lausanne ‘74—was held July 16-25, 1974, in Lausanne, Switzerland. The gathering was called by a committee headed by Billy Graham and drew more than 2,300 evangelical leaders

Let the Church Be the Church

I recently came upon this “Reflections” column by Floyd Strater from our December 12, 1982, issue. For many decades, as I recall, the editor of Christian Standard would ask a group of 12 or 13 people—a new group annually—to contribute four essays during the year. The topics were not assigned. Sam E. Stone told me he would strive for a variety of writers each year: men, women, preachers, professors, missionaries, and others from a broad geographical area. Floyd Strater was serving as minister with Knott Avenue Christian Church in Anaheim, California, at the time he wrote this. He preached there

New Year, New Theme, New Writers

By Mark A. Taylor We owe thanks to the National Missionary Convention and its 2008 president Doug Priest for the theme of this week”s issue. In fact, we”re so taken with the “Get Your Hands Dirty” idea, we”ll emphasize it throughout 2009. When Doug spoke to our annual contributing editors retreat about a year ago, he shared some of the material we”re publishing this week. We were so compelled then by his challenge we decided we had to share it more widely. As we considered the multitude of pressing needs around the world””and the creative ways so many churches are

Making the Most of Our Opportunities

By Mark A. Taylor In one November weekend, our fellowship lost two leaders who encouraged, challenged, and inspired us for decades. Our memories of Russ Blowers and Gene Dulin will last our whole lives, and their influence will be felt for generations to come. Blowers touched individual lives and influenced parachurch ministries around the world from his home base in Indianapolis. He led the East 49th Street Christian Church to become the East 91st Street Christian Church and shepherded it to greatness in 45 years of ministry there. Always quick with an encouraging word, he brought wisdom and guidance to

Partnering to Grow Disciples

By Mark A. Taylor Randy Gariss believes not enough people today””inside or outside the church””look enough like Jesus (READ GARISS’S COLUMN). And he asks, isn”t that the hallmark of a disciple, to look like Jesus? And isn”t the church”s job to make disciples? In this week”s “Reflections,” he suggests we need to rethink our process for leading people to be more like Jesus. He offers three ingredients””knowledge, relationship, and service””in a simple recipe for disciple-making. I like what he says. I particularly resonate with his challenge to the church: Let”s shorten our list of activities, sharpen our focus on just
