Not Just on Sunday

The Lord's Supper is more than a Sunday observance. Through Paul's words in Scripture, discover how remembering Christ's sacrifice can shape our thoughts, words, and actions throughout the week.

Remembering Christ's Sacrifice
In brief

Remembering Christ’s Sacrifice Beyond Sunday Communion

The Lord’s Supper invites believers to reflect deeply on Christ’s death and its lasting significance. Drawing from Paul’s words in Galatians and 2 Corinthians, this devotional encourages Christians to carry the meaning of Jesus’ sacrifice into their daily thoughts, words, and actions.

  • Remembering Christ’s death should extend beyond Sunday worship.
  • Paul’s writings show how Christ’s crucifixion shapes daily Christian living.
  • Communion calls believers to reflect Christ through their conduct throughout the week.

When we gather for worship on the Lord’s Day, we bring a solemn reverence to the observance of the Lord’s Supper. This is a time for heartfelt meditation as we visualize the Savior hanging on that old rugged cross. Commemorating Christ’s death with this depth of feeling will have a profound and enduring affect. Remembering the Lord’s death is more than a Sunday observance. It’s an event that makes a lasting impact.

Carrying Christ’s Death into Daily Life

Scripture bears this out. In Galatians 2:20 (New International Version), Paul wrote these words: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” He allowed the crucifixion of Christ to permeate his life to such an extent that it became an integral part of his daily living.

In 2 Corinthians 4:10 Paul states, “We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.” Notice Paul’s use of the phrase “always carry around.” In other words, the death of Jesus is not just a once-a-week commemoration as we gather around the Lord’s table on Sunday. But rather, the impact of his death becomes such an important part of our lives that Christ is manifested through us.

Remembering Jesus’ sacrifice is not restricted to a Sunday observance but should remain with us throughout the coming week. Let’s allow Christ’s crucifixion to become so real to us that it governs our conduct—our thoughts, words, and actions. As we partake of the emblems, let’s prepare our hearts to reside in a place of reflection as we go about our daily lives.
