The State of Campus Ministry: An Interview with David Embree

By TR Robertson David Embree has led Christian Campus House at Missouri State University in Springfield for 41 years. I talked to him about the state of campus ministry, past, present, and future. QUESTION: Why is campus ministry important? ANSWER: As Charles Malik [former president of the United Nations General Assembly] said back in the ’60s, if you want to impact the world, impact campuses. Eighty-five percent of kids from our churches go to non-church-related schools; [it] is going to be one of the most challenging intellectual and spiritual experiences of their lives. We need to be the church on

You Found Me: Reaching College Students on Their Level

By Greg Swinney and Beth Swinney He was scrolling down his Facebook page on a computer in the university library when I nudged him and asked if I could bother him for a few minutes. Tom looked over and immediately stopped what he was doing and said, “Sure, what’s up?” I knew I could count on Tom, a prelaw student, to level with me. “What are college kids looking for these days in a church?” I asked. “I’m scratching my head to figure that one out.” Tom didn’t flinch. He said, “We are looking for a place that’s real. A

Campus Ministry at the Crossroads

By T.R. Robertson “Missionaries have long known you don”t need permission to preach the gospel,” says Lance Tamerius, “You just need a little more savvy.” Tamerius is director of the Christian Campus House at the University of Missouri in Columbia. Like many other campus ministries, CCH is taking steps to change the way it pursues God”s mission in the face of rapid changes in the culture of secular campuses nationwide. Diversity and Discrimination at Missouri Several years ago the University of Missouri asked all student organizations to sign a nondiscrimination covenant. “At that time,” Tamerius says, “we talked with our board

From College, for the Church

By T.R. Robertson My sons loved going to church on Wednesday nights when they were little. In 1990 they were stairstep kids, ages 5, 4, and 3, and they were bundles of energy. I have to admit, my boys had a reputation for being a real handful. The teachers needed all the help they could get. Help came in the form of students from Central Christian College of the Bible, Moberly, Missouri, just 30 miles to the north. David, one of those students, remembers the experience well. “I was traveling on Sundays singing for the college during my sophomore year,”

Following Jesus on Campus

By Greg Swinney Richard Nixon was president, a first-class postage stamp cost 6 cents, Neil Armstrong said, “That”s one small step for man,” and Gary Hawes began as campus minister at Michigan State University in East Lansing. It was 1969. We spoke with Gary earlier this year, after his 45 years of fruitful labors and nearly 4,000 university students baptized into Christ. How did you decide to enter campus ministry? Who influenced you? It was late in the 1960s and it was a wonderful time to get started in campus ministry. The Jesus movement was really moving. They held an entirely different

College Age Meets Middle Age

By Chris DeWelt Josh Quade, college age minister at College Heights Christian Church in Joplin, Missouri, has led us in choosing a church-based model of outreach and ministry. This allows us to pursue students on four major college campuses while simultaneously connecting them to a healthy, multidimensional church community. We see the church-based, intergenerational approach as an important discipling strategy where we walk with young adults as they prepare for their future career with a strong spiritual foundation. Personally, as an elder in a church with the word college in its very title, I find that the most important thing

Students Stoked about Pepperdine”s “˜Surf Chapel”

By Jennifer Johnson Three years ago, Grant Waggoner, an alumnus and employee of Pepperdine University (Malibu, CA), began mentoring a few students at the school. This “small group” shared a love of surfing, and one of the guys eventually invited his professor, Dr. Robert Shearer. “Grant and I began sharing leadership of the group,” Shearer, assistant professor of decision science, says. “Last year he got married and moved, but I”m at Zuma Beach, about 15 minutes north of the Pepperdine campus, every Wednesday morning at 7:30. This year we”ve been averaging 100 students each week.” There are no classes on

God Is Working, God Will Work!

By Mark A. Taylor Several facts are clear as we look at reports from colleges and campus ministries posted at this site this month: “¢ These are tough times for Christian colleges. As more than one writer mentions, a perfect storm of difficult situations””sluggish economy, a smaller population of new high school graduates, higher expectations among students and parents, and greater competition, to name the most mentioned””have caused much navel-gazing and budget cutting among college administrators everywhere. Small secular colleges are facing many of the same pressures, and this is some consolation, but not enough. If the economic or cultural

Five Off-Target Notions about Starting a College-age Ministry

By Michael C. Mack Is your church planning a ministry to college-age students this fall? Before you do, be sure to clear away any of the fallacies church leaders often have. Brad Baker, college minister at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, lists these five: You must hire a (preferably young and trendy) full-time staff person. You must have a cool band and a world-class communicator. Your church must be close to a university campus. Your goal is to have a huge crowd of students. You need experience to start a college-age ministry. “”www.collegeministry.com/top-5-misconceptions-about-starting-a-college-age-ministry/

Mondays with Roy

By T.R. Robertson For nearly two years, from the first Monday in September 2004, until the first Monday in June 2006, I made a weekly trip from the Mizzou Christian Campus House to the Missouri state prison for women in Vandalia, Missouri, in the company of campus minister Roy Weece and an ever-changing group of students and CCH alums. Roy was always the driver. No one ever considered asking if he”d rather just ride along and let someone else drive. After decades of driving a succession of white Volkswagen beetles for hundreds of thousands of miles to hundreds of speaking

The “˜Real World” After College: The Spiritual Care and Feeding of Twentysomethings

Three young adults show why traditional, typical approaches to reaching them may not always work.    By David Embree   Ben Metzger grew up in a small town where his family was active in a tight-knit, Bible-believing church. Before he even moved into his college dorm room, his congregation”s youth leaders connected him with a campus ministry where he developed close friendships and studied the Word of God intently.  As a part of the campus ministry, he went on mission trips and led small groups that helped younger students face the spiritual and intellectual battles of the university experience. Ben enjoyed the “college-age”
