Churches and Reading, Conversation and Insight

From the new book Reading for the Common Good By C. Christopher Smith Reading is essential to the health and flourishing of our churches. However, reading and conversation must go hand in hand.  Reading that is most beneficial is reading that takes its cues from and is shared and discussed””in some way or another””with the local church body. Just as a body works together””seeing, feeling, listening””to understand its identity, so our churches are faced with the task of working together to understand our identity. Reading is a valuable tool in this process of discerning our identity, but only to the

Church Fulfilling Its Vision to Go Deeper

By Jennifer Johnson Three years ago, North Boulevard Church of Christ (Murfreesboro, TN) embarked on a “20/20 Vision” initiative to accomplish several goals, including paying off the loan on their current building, devoting themselves to prayer, growing in diversity among their church body, planting more churches””and developing a School of Christian Thought to help people think critically and with a Christian worldview. “The leadership team voted unanimously to pursue this vision, and we began praying about raising the funds and casting the vision for our church,” says Renée Sproles, director of the school. “We needed $1.6 million to accomplish it

They are not the result of research but impressions shared by several faculty members who have taught more than 20 years at Hope International University in Fullerton, California. Many students vary from these generalities, of course. On the whole, today”s students are different in significant ways from their counterparts 10 to 15 years ago, and this presents challenges to teaching staff. Some of the statements may seem critical

Christian College: High Value

These days everyone is thinking about value received for money spent. In keeping with the times, we asked each of the Christian colleges in our annual survey to write a few paragraphs on this theme: “The High Value of Your Education at Our School.” Their reports follow.     Alberta Bible College Empowered to dream! Equipped to serve! Students join Alberta Bible College at different points on their faith journeys, but each is greeted with the same challenging question, “Where does your deep gladness meet the world”s deep need?”But students who are uncertain about attending ABC should ask

Why Go to a Christian College?

By Dusty Rubeck This article is no academic exercise for a college president to justify his vocation. At least not totally. You see, my 17-year-old daughter is a senior in high school and wrestling through her own decision about what college to attend next fall. My son is just two years behind her. Neither one is clear about what they want to do for their life vocations. Why go to Christian college? Answering this question is not simply an intellectual exercise for me. I”ve got skin in the game. Literally. GREAT VALUE Why go to Christian college? First of all,

Interview with Justin Bilyeu

By Brad Dupray As a senior at Cincinnati Christian University, 22-year-old Justin Bilyeu is honing his leadership skills as captain of both the basketball and baseball teams and as a dormitory resident assistant. In his “spare time” he is a member of the golf team, too. More importantly, Justin is studying for ministry by pursuing a BA in biblical studies. Justin says, “Cincinnati has a preaching degree, but I chose the biblical studies route to go a little more in depth. I”ll use my summer internships to gain preaching experience.” Justin grew up at the Okolona Christian Church in Louisville,

By John Derry Hope International University (www.hiu.edu) Among the many challenges faced by growing and active churches is, “How do we find enough qualified servant-leaders to meet the needs of our congregation?” Demands on the pastoral staff make it difficult to devote the kind of time required to prepare comprehensive training sessions that address critical issues. At the same time, emerging leaders with outstanding potential are assuming more responsibility and desire to refine their ministry skills. They recognize the importance of doing their jobs well, are eager to put new ideas into practice, and want to be sure they have
