Publishing Committee Insights

We selected the second—and shorter—editorial from p. 3 of the September 3, 1978, issue to share today. “Fifteen Gifted Men,” written by Sam E. Stone during his first year as editor, describes the arrangement for editorial oversight that was in place during the 50 or so years Standex International owned Standard Publishing, the former parent company of Christian Standard and The Lookout. To set the stage: The first edition of Christian Standard was published in April 1866, with Isaac Errett serving as editor. Standard Publishing “grew up around it”—it’s often been said—and was incorporated in 1872. Additional publications were created,

The Restoration Movement: Its Vitality, Quirks, and Needs in the 21st Century

Editor’s Note: Starting today, every Thursday we will post an article about the Restoration Movement from our Christian Standard archives. While some will be more recent stories, many others will be excerpts from older issues, going back to 1866, that are currently not available on the web. It’s “Throwback Thursday” . . . Christian Standard-style!   Today we go back to December 2006 to an article by LeRoy Lawson, which started as a presentation in the Publishing Committee’s 50th annual meeting in October that year. The Publishing Committee provided editorial oversight to Standard Publishing (the longtime owners of Christian Standard)

Securing a Future

By Jerry Harris What”s going on with the CHRISTIAN STANDARD and The Lookout? As a pastor of a church and a founding board member of The Solomon Foundation, I was interested in the answer to that question. Both magazines have been staples of the Restoration Movement from early on, and I, like many, had assumed they would always be there. When I heard in our board meeting the CHRISTIAN STANDARD and The Lookout could be shut down because their owners had found no buyers for them, I was deeply troubled. The chairman of the Publishing Committee had informed Doug Crozier,

A Fresh Start, a Firm Commitment

By Mark A. Taylor You have received the last issue of C hristian Standard bearing the familiar 8121 Hamilton Avenue address. Effective Monday, March 19, all of Standard Publishing’s offices will have relocated to a beautiful, new location in Mason, Ohio, on the northern edge of Greater Cincinnati. We are delighted to be moving to the top floor of an attractive office building, where we’ll be surrounded by glass walls, sitting at new desks, and enjoying a contemporary work environment. It’s important to note what our move signifies and what it doesn’t. As announced in our August 16 issue, we

Two Important People

By Mark A. Taylor The most important part of any project is not the budget or the building or the technology or the method. Each of these can help, but not as much as one other factor: The people are always the most important ingredient. This is why leadership is the biggest challenge for the local church. Nothing matters more than the combination of faithfulness and giftedness in those overseeing the church’s various ministries. It’s true for Standard Publishing, too. Consider our Publishing Committee. Formed about 50 years ago to help guarantee the faithfulness of Standard Publishing’s products, the Publishing

Hitting Their Stride

By Mark A. Taylor Some Christian leaders only begin to hit their stride at age 50. Others cross that threshold and start seeing themselves as has beens. It can happen to institutions as well, but everyone who attended the 50th anniversary meeting of Standard Publishing’s Publishing Committee was energized about the committee’s and the company’s future. Several committee members said the event, October 10 and 11, was one of their best get togethers ever. This year we invited several committee members to reflect on the opportunities and challenges before our loose knit fellowship of Christian churches and churches of Christ.

Good News Is for Sharing

By Mark A. Taylor Readers of our weekly e newsletter have received two notes this summer about the sale of Standard Publishing. The letter below is the second of those, distributed August 9. In addition a hard copy was mailed to every Christian church and church of Christ at about the same time. But we’d rather share our news too many times than not enough. The fact is that Standard Publishing is embarking on an exciting new chapter in its service to the church, undergirded by commitments and principles that have guided us for more than 14 decades. Please pray

These People Are Making a Difference

By Mark A. Taylor “The people are the program.” That advice to me from a mentor in ministry more than 30 years ago has proven true in one endeavor after another. It certainly applies to our work at Standard Publishing. Of course we’re concerned about methods, technology, and knowledge. But we know the best tools mean little without the right spirit among those who use them. That’s why we’re glad to announce the latest addition to our Publishing Committee. Ben Cachiaras , minister with Mountain Christian Church, Joppa, Maryland, has the perspective and experience to make a real contribution. In
